What would you have prefered? The hammer and sickle? Way to take my statement completely out of context. Makes me wonder if someone is doing the same thing in the article.
If you'll re-read my post, what bugged me is that it was extremely short-lived-- and the ones that didn't even bother to remove the flags left a tattered remnant which, in my opinion, is worse than removing it.
Our flag is an icon that needs to be cherished and kept looking good.

I agree. My neighborhood is full of tattered, faded flags flying 24 hours a day, in all kinds of weather. What I wonder is if these people, the ones with the bumper stickers and lapel pins, were so patriotic, where were their flags before 9/11? To slap a flag bumper sticker on your car after 9/11 and call yourself a patriot, and criticize those who don't fly a flag as unpatriotic, seems a little misguided, at best.

Before I listen to "Locamotive Breath" no more, I'm going to want to see some context on this quote.
It is easy to confabulate nationalism and patriotism. Patriotism is loving your country and wanting to protect it, preserve it, and defend it. Nationalism is wanting to take over the World.
Of course, sometimes you have to do a little of the latter to ensure the former. I think we have to take over at least some parts of the World, given our current situation.

Well, I misread your first post too Egon, but I thoroughly agree with your number 9. Proper flag etiquette calls for it to be disposed of respectfully and properly when it becomes tattered and worn.
