Slavery Question: Please Help.

Hello Everyone,
I am having a discussion with an extremely liberal friend of mine, and he made the claim that only Christian white societies have ever been involved in slavery. I know this isn't true, but for the life of me, can't come up with any counter examples.
Can anybody here assist me in finding counter examples, and resources to back them up?
thanks.

It is very common knowledge that the abeya descends from slavery in Arabic countries... As a woman was considered the property of her father and then her husband, she was only able to display her face to those with the proper authority... This is one of the reasons so many women find the veil so offensive... It has a very painful history....

The Father of American slavery was a man named Anthony Johnson.
In 1655 the courts in Northhampton, Virginia
awarded Mr. Johnson, ownership of a black man
by the name of John Casor, as the first "slave for life"
known in the American colonies.
Interestingly enough, Anthony Johnson was also a black man.

Your friend is a history illiterate.
Slavery was widespread in the ancient world and extensively practiced by the Romans. It died out gradually after Europe became Christian. The word "slave" is derived from "slav," the ethnic group Russians, Czechs and Yugoslavs belong to because of the practice of the Germanic tribes to enslave them. The advent of Christian Europe essentially ended slavery there.
While dormant in the Europe, slavery was widespread in the Muslim world. If I remember correctly slavery was only outlawed in Saudi Arabia in the 1960's, and is still practiced in many countries like Sudan and Mauritania.
The Portuguese began the trade in African slaves in the 15th century in part to pay for their exploration program down the coast of Africa, which eventually resulted in the discovery of a route to India around the Cape of Good Hope. But the champions of the slave trade were the British. The twin pillars of the wealth of the City of London were the trade in slaves and the India trade.
As Europe enters a post-Christian era the slave trade is reviving, with the trafficing of white women, mostly East European, for the sex trade, where they are kept under virtual slavery.

"There are more slaves today than were seized from Africa in four centuries of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. The modern commerce in humans rivals illegal drug trafficking in its global reachand in the destruction of lives. "
This quote is from a NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC article that was published earlier this year. And they are not in white, Christian nations.

Oh, yeah. The ancient Incas. Almost forgot about them. They would use thousands of their own children for harems, slavery and human sacrifice.
Just do some online searching and printing. Then hand your friend the info you collected on Chinese, African, Arab and Inca slavery.

Your extremely liberal friend sounds like he is either six years old or has an IQ of about 40.

He's No White Boy The escape from North Korea does not end the ordeal for many defectors. The South Korean and Russian borders are heavily guarded, so most flee across the long but shallow Tumen and Yalu rivers to China, where a large ethnic Korean community might offer aid.
But China has a pact to return the escapees to its communist ally. Defectors are rounded up in periodic crackdowns; North Korea puts them in labor camps for periods ranging from two months to life. Those who remain fugitives in China are vulnerable to sexual, physical and financial exploitation.

You might have missed this part...
In addition to the frontier soldiers, the builders included conscripted laborers and convicts in exile.

I reccomend the book of Philemon. It is a Pauline Epistle urging Philemon to accept Onesimus (?), his former slave, now a Christian, as a brother.

I just realized that after reading most of these posts and making a few myself...
we forgot the one most important thing.
A Liberal will noy accept logic as a response, it was fun though.

That's true... And their slaves were "volunteered" for human sacrifice also...

Spartacus. He and the survivors of the revolt were crucified.
African slaves were commonly a trade item.
Face it. You are king of all you can see, sitting on the Lion throne, and along comes this guy with a load of beads and trinkets your wives just gotta have. So ditch a few slackers, get rid of the worthless brother-in law who is eyeballing your job, and keep the wimmen folks happy. Whatta deal! Yo! Abdul! You an' me gotta talk, here!

Since your friend clearly clearly isn't a MENSA candidate, I would suggest you do the following:
1. Tell him to watch the movie Ben Hur.
2. Tell him that it's not really a movie -- it's actually a documentary about the life of a Jewish man enslaved by the Romans.
Sounds like he'll have no trouble at all believing this.
