A computer question

Posted on 10/28/2003 8:43:34 PM PST by Oreo Kookey

If I'm out of line asking this here, please just delete the thread.

Many of the sites my email friends suggest display only a line boarder with a square in the upper left corner with a tiny red square, gray circle and blue triangle inside. Does anyone know why this happens. I'm using Windows 98, on SBC DSL, Outlook Express and IE. I can't find anything anywhere on this problem. Mainly because I don't even know what to call it.

Any help would be so appreciated.

Only the test at the bottome of the screen is picked up in the copy - paste. The little square in the otherwise empty picture frame is visible only to me. How lucky for me.

I think you need a couple of pieces of software to view it:

http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=Shockwave

and

http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash

These "plug into your browser" and you will be able to see those pages. I have them on my computer and I was able to see the link you posted.

Also, I don't know how your security is set, but you have to allow cookies for macromedia.com, to be able to download the programs.

They sound like pictures that didn't load.
The border and small graphic are placecards for graphics that don't showup.
There are more reasons that this happens then can be explained by a generic catch all. IE: Ad blockers, internet security, browser settings, etc., etc., etc.

Thanks for the suggestions but Show Picture is checked already, and HTML is on. Maybe I can't do anything about it. It may be the sender, eh.

Thanks

If what you are describing looks like then it is the result of an image that is not loading. If, on the other hand, you are trying to describe , (which I believe is what you are describing) then it is the result of a missing plugin.

I have been trying to download Flash and nothing happens. If I need it to see some pictures, that would explain it. I even left a message on the Flash website about my trouble and got el-zippo for a reply.

Thanks

Check post #22. You may need to adjust your browser's security settings so it will accept cookies.

It is indeed the latter. Must be the Flash I can't get. I remember now I did download it but couldn't install it. I thought I followed the instructions. I've tried it several times. Gosh, it hurts to be less than a novice.

The second image yevgenie posted is what they might see in IE until an image loads into the cache. Look under Tools>Internet Options>Advanced and see if "show image download placeholders" is checked. That'll possibly explain what they're seeing, but why the images don't load is another story.

Sometimes just emptying the cache helps.

Got cha. And I may know what it is. I have a setting somewhere that deletes cookies and temp internet files every time I something-or-other. Don't you guys love trying to help a complete illiterate? I appreciate you all trying to help. I'll have to find where I empty the cookies and not do that any more. I thought it was better than trying to remember to do it before they ate my free space. There I go, thinking again.

Under that same tab you might have "empty temporary internet files folder when browser is closed".

And by the way, not that it has to do with your problem (hopefully), but since you're going to look there under that same tab you might want to consider unchecking "install on demand". It's one more way to protect yourself against spyware. If something has to be loaded, let it ask you first.
