I received this from a friend today:
Can you imagine working for a company that has more than 500 Executive employees and has the following statistics:
*29 have been accused of spousal abuse
*7 have been arrested for fraud
*19 have been accused of writing bad checks
*117 have directly or indirectly bankrupted at least 2 businesses
*3 have done time for assault
*71 cannot get a credit card due to bad credit
*14 have been arrested on drug-related charges
*8 have been arrested for shoplifting
*21 are currently defendants in lawsuits
*84 have been arrested for drunk driving in the last year...
Can you guess which organization this is?
Give up yet?
It's the 535 members of the United States Congress.
The same group that cranks out hundreds of new laws each year designed to keep the rest of us in line.

This was first reported in the early 90's, by Doug Thompson of Captial Hill Blue, and has been pretty much proved to be a hoax then, of course with doug thompson you can't be to sure.

Pure B.S. Does anyone really believe that 1 out of 6 US Congressmen have been arrested for drunk driving in the past 12 months?

Yeah, this one sounds suspicious, or I guess it's just imprecisly phrased. I mean were 58 1/2 of them in business together, twice? Oh alright, you do the math!

Guess What Organization of More Than 500 Employees This Is?- Truth! & Misleading! |
|
|
Summary of the eRumor This email talks about an organization of more than 500 employees that has an array of spouse abusers, bad check artists, failures in business, shoplifters, and other criminals...and asks you to guess what organization it is. It then tells you that it is referring to the United States Congress. |
|
|
|
The Truth TruthOrFiction.com cannot vouch for every allegation in this email, but it is not fabricated. Although the eRumor that is circulated doesn't say it, these figures come from a series of articles by the website CAPITOL HILL BLUE (www.chblue.com).
Also, their research covers both present and past members of Congress, so the email is misleading in leaving the impression that the statistics are referring to the present Congress.
They are from the work of Capitol Hill Blue editor Jack Sharp, researcher Marilyn Crosslyn, and private Investigator James Hargill. In the articles, they don't document every instance of wrongdoing, but they claim to have it.

A real example of the eRumor as it has appeared on the Internet: |
Can you imagine working for a company that has a little more than 500 employees and has the following statistics:
*29 have been accused of spousal abuse *7 have been arrested for fraud *19 have been accused of writing bad checks *117 have directly or indirectly bankrupted at least 2 businesses *3 have done time for assault *71 cannot get a credit card due to bad credit *14 have been arrested on drug-related charges *8 have been arrested for shoplifting *21 are currently defendants in lawsuits *84 have been arrested for drunk driving in the last year Can you guess which organization this is?

Now
that's interesting!!!
Here's what I found...
http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/outrage/congress.htm
...but I think your "TruthOrFiction" site might be "essential research" too...Snopes is (I think) "standard", but I have thought from time to time that they have a particular POV, and while I'm sure they're accurate with the "facts" as presented, they do seem to have left out some details included in the TruthOrFiction summary of "Congressional misdeeds"...
Thanks for the info!
(the sad part is, the bogus e-stats are all too believable...!!)

I read the Snopes refutation. It read more like an opinion piece than a factual article. That is unusual for Snopes.
