ROCKERVILLE, S.D. - Gene Davis went hunting for elk and came home with a motorcycle instead.

While stalking elk on Forest Service land near Rockerville a few weeks ago, Davis spotted what appeared to be a tail light protruding from a mound of dirt. A little digging revealed a 1980 Kawasaki 750-cc motorcycle which, it turns out, was reported stolen in 1982.

Davis, his wife and two daughters returned the next day and dug up the 400-pound cycle.

It had no license plate but it did have an Air Force sticker on it. In a storage compartment they found insurance and title papers with the name of Paul J. Duffy.

An investigation by the Pennington County Sheriff's Office revealed that the motorcycle had been reported stolen in 1982.

Efforts to locate Paul J. Duffy have been unsuccessful. A police report said he had been employed at Ellsworth Air Force Base but apparently left South Dakota.

Davis told police if Duffy can't be found or doesn't want the cycle, he'll keep it.

"If it was pressure-washed, it might look pretty good," he said.

Keys to the motorcycle are missing but it still had gas in the tank and 9,500 miles on the odometer.

Which is what I've always done with the bikes I've stolen.

Well, at least the ones you don't field-dress and butcher out right away....

eerie...
Reminds me of that old made-for-TV movie "Chiefs". IIRC, one of the main characters
was a motorcycle cop played by Brad Davis, whose police motorcycle was buried
(with Davis aboard?) by some bad old guy...I think David Carridine played the killer.

It's been years since I saw it, but it was actually a pretty good film, with
IIRC, Steven Collins and Victoria Tennent (sp?) in the lead roles.
