ROCKERVILLE, S.D. - Gene Davis went hunting for elk and came home with a motorcycle instead.
While stalking elk on Forest Service land near Rockerville a few weeks ago, Davis spotted what appeared to be a tail light protruding from a mound of dirt. A little digging revealed a 1980 Kawasaki 750-cc motorcycle which, it turns out, was reported stolen in 1982.
Davis, his wife and two daughters returned the next day and dug up the 400-pound cycle.
It had no license plate but it did have an Air Force sticker on it. In a storage compartment they found insurance and title papers with the name of Paul J. Duffy.
An investigation by the Pennington County Sheriff's Office revealed that the motorcycle had been reported stolen in 1982.
Efforts to locate Paul J. Duffy have been unsuccessful. A police report said he had been employed at Ellsworth Air Force Base but apparently left South Dakota.
Davis told police if Duffy can't be found or doesn't want the cycle, he'll keep it.
"If it was pressure-washed, it might look pretty good," he said.
Keys to the motorcycle are missing but it still had gas in the tank and 9,500 miles on the odometer.

Was that the 2 stroke triple? Possibly -- sounds too light to be a Vulcan.
Mr "M" did you get the Norton email html I sent you?
If that's me, no, I don't think I did.

The headline also assumes that the bike was buried immediately after it was reported stolen.

Which is what I've always done with the bikes I've stolen.
Um, I mean, yes, the headline does indeed assume that.

They confused the year of the m/c (1980) with the year it was reported stolen.

I wonder what's going on down here in the Big Easy. Scads of bikers going by on Elysian Fields, walking the dog at lunch today.
(Thanks for keeping me on your ping list, by the way. I do love your graphics. =)

Come to think of it, you're right. They didn't start making the Vulcan until 1985.
It just seems like they've been making it forever. <|:)~

I bought a new '81 Suzuki GS 1100EX and rode it for 10 years until I bought a new '91 Sportster ~ I sold my last dirt ('83 Suzuki DR 500) bike in '84 ~ Calif offroad riding regulations started to suck, so I quite. :)
