Newly elected Senator Abdul El-Sayed on Friday declared Michigan “the capital of Arab America,” causing a viral reaction on social media ranging from criticism to others offering data to support his claim.
Speaking at the Connect Arab America Empowerment Summit in the Washington, D.C. suburb of Chantilly, Virginia, El-Sayed opened his remarks speaking his name in Arabic fashion and went on to make the claim.
“I’m honored to be the next United States senator from the great state of Michigan, which of course I know we’re here in D.C. which of course is the capital of the United States of America,” he said. “But Michigan is the capital of Arab America.”
The term “Capital of Arab America” has historically been used to describe the Detroit suburb of Dearborn, Michigan, the city that has the largest Arab population in the United States, many of them descendants of families that came in the early 20th century seeking jobs in Henry Ford’s auto assembly plants. It also has the largest Lebanese-American population in the U.S.
Dearborn aside, statewide, California reportedly has more Arab Americans than Michigan.
El-Sayed’s comments ignited a firestorm of comments on X, with accounts posting videos of the remarks.
”WTF,” wrote influencer Mario Nawfal.
Ryan Fournier, founder of Students for Trump, cautioned not to take El-Sayed’s claim lightly.
“Home to Dearborn, deep roots, and real political muscle — Michigan isn’t just a battleground state anymore.,” he wrote. “It is officially the powerhouse of the Arab American movement. Pay attention. Everything is shifting.”

Originally most of the Arabs in Michigan were Lebanese Christians.
He’s just being honest.
That’s how he sees things.
In his world it’s all about Islam and Arab, and most his voters agree.
I had one young lady tell me how she likes him a lot (not a voter in MI, just a lady here in Texas hearing about him). I explained to her he’s not Latino. Then her opinion of him changes. That’s what people vote on.
It’s nice to see colonialism making a comeback.
I particularly can’t stand arrogant, smirking types like El-Sayed.
He thinks he is always right, can bully anyone, looks down on the lowly people around him and can get whatever he wants. Like a dangerous spoiled little boy brat pushing everyone around.
Sounds like alladin has been rubbing piker’s magic wand. As a side note, not currently an Arab America. Currently.
But in front of the camera he is slick. Even Bill Clinton can take lessons from him.
Another thread said he had 50% of the Jewish vote to win his US Senate election. That does not mean he doesn’t despise and have disdain for Jewish people. Not at all.
Does this mean we finally have a place to gather with our rifles?

Currently I saw on the news a few months ago that both Dearborn and adjoining Dearborn Heights have city government office signs in front, in halls and on doors with Arabic lettering along with small words in English under them.
The stretch of Warren Avenue (named for officer with George Washington in battles) has been officially changed with a big ceremony to Osama Siblani —a strongly activist Arab newspaper publisher.
Our old “Press 2 for English” phone jokes used to be funny.
Michigan needs reconstruction 1865 style.
