A judge and the state AG say Facebook didn’t block enough political speech.
Can one state regulate speech for the other 49? We’re about to find out after a New Mexico judge on Wednesday ordered Meta to pay $25 billion for supposedly misleading the public about its privacy and content moderation policies. Its real offense is not doing more to censor speech that progressives dislike.
The $25 billion penalty ranks among the largest court judgments against a single company in U.S. history. Based on the judge’s over-egged rhetoric, you’d think the parent company of Facebook had turned over its platform to sex traffickers. “The harm in this matter is difficult to overstate, and goes to the heart of Facebook’s basic business proposition,” wrote Judge Francis Mathew.
New Mexico sued Meta in 2021 under state law for allegedly misrepresenting how it handled user data related to its Cambridge Analytica lapse a decade ago. A survey app on Facebook’s platform had violated its terms by selling the anonymized data of millions of Americans to other parties to target political advertisements.
Meta in 2019 agreed to pay $5 billion to settle claims by the Federal Trade Commission for violating consumer privacy. It has since settled related claims by most states. Yet New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez has used the privacy lapse as a hook for a larger legal attack against Meta for insufficiently policing “hate speech” and “misinformation.”

You mean New America.
What used to be New “Mexico.”
No good people on either side of this spat.
(Not talking about New Mexico citizens, just the government.)
I’d be happy if BOTH sides could lose.
So now states are going to try to fill their coffers through litigation? I guess NM has some debts to pay?
Who decides what is “hate speech” and “misinformation”? Where is the list of “hate speech” and “misinformation” that should be blocked? 1st amendment does not apply?
So many questions left unanswered. I find most things that democrats say as “hate speech” and “misinformation”. Will they now ban democrats from speaking?
Reread the story, it was 25 Billion with a B.
So I was only off by an order of magnitude...what’s the b8g deal?😀
Where is the list of “hate speech” and “misinformation” that should be blocked?
Its anything a leftist says it is. Any “list” is fluid and malleable to any situation where the leftist doesn’t have reasonable arguments to refute the points being raised.
“Hate speech” laws should be reversed. There is no such thing.
