A 48-year-old woman is charged with first-degree murder, accused of stabbing a 7-year-old girl to death on a South Side street Saturday morning.
Shavon Gayden, 48, is scheduled for a detention hearing at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse on Monday, according to CPD. Additional details about what prosecutors believe happened on the sidewalk in the 8600 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue could emerge during the hearing. Court records show Gayden has also had an outstanding felony warrant for more than 18 months.
One man knocked Gayden unconscious not far from where Eddimar was attacked, allowing police to take her into custody. CPD said Gayden suffered injuries in the attack by witnesses, but they were not life-threatening.
As some witnesses called 911, another flagged down a passing CPD patrol car. Officers radioed for an ambulance and tried to save Eddimar’s life by applying pressure to her wounds as an angry crowd gathered. EMS took her to Comer Children’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Investigators found two knives in Gayden’s purse. A third knife, believed to be the murder weapon, was found between the attack site and the location where the alleged attacker was rendered unconscious, according to a preliminary CPD report.
Gayden’s court file shows she pleaded guilty in November 2024 to aggravated battery of a CTA bus driver in South Chicago and received two years of probation. The following month, she was arrested again on misdemeanor battery and assault charges, resulting in a probation violation. She pleaded guilty to those charges in July 2025 and received a sentence of court supervision, according to court records.

One assault should be 6 months. A 2nd assault should be 2 years. Not enough jail cells.
Illinois Governor Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Johnson were unavailable for comment.
And murder should get the death penalty.
Prayers for that little girl and her family. Horrible.
Illinois has abolished the death penalty.
“shavon”
The criminals must surely know this. They can murder without fear of it, then. No deterrence.
Of course they have no comment they could give a rats ass about criminals roaming the streets of Chicago, they both have armed security they are safe and sound
Prior violent offenses, but never did time. Had an active arrest warrant for 18 months that was never enforced. Now they’ll claim she’s too mentally ill to stand trial, but somebody in the system determined that she wasn’t too mentally ill or violent to be walking the streets when she stabbed that poor girl to death.
“We call on the parents across the country to send their children to walk the streets of Chicago so that criminals who can't be locked up can work out their desires by stabbing them. Thank you.”
Lives of non-criminals aren’t worth very much in Chicago.
It used to be prison lifers had that attitude. They could kill behind bars, and know the only thing they were going to get was another life sentence. Now it's the criminals on the street that feel that way, because they know they can commit multiple violent offenses, and not be locked up for them.
ADD ABOUT 20 TO EACH OF THOSE NUMBERS
They never will be.
I cannot wait to leave here. I’m sure mental illness will be used as an excuse.
Illinois has a law where you can forcibly commit someone if they’re a danger to themselves or others, but it is rarely used.
My high school boyfriend had an elderly neighbor whose son had very severe paranoid schizophrenia - wouldn’t medicate. She started slipping it into his food, he found out, so he started dosing HER food with it. He almost killed her and he still wasn’t committed; just a 48-hour hold. He also had a habit of revving his engine in the driveway during the wee hours.
Will a herd of females line up to support her?
Hell is awaiting them.
Even though justice is not being done on earth (which is exceedingly frustrating), they will face the music some day.
