Renovations to Ocean Terminal at the Port of Savannah are now more than 60% complete, with the project on track to make Savannah one of the most capable container ports on the East Coast, the Georgia Ports Authority announced Tuesday at its board of directors meeting.
The $1.6 billion project is expanding Ocean Terminal’s annual container capacity from its current 200,000 TEU to 1.75 million twenty-foot equivalent units — a nearly ninefold increase designed to handle the growing volume of cargo moving through the Georgia coast.
“Ocean Terminal is a major part of our strategy to prepare Savannah for future growth. The renovated berth is fully completed and ready for big ships,” said Georgia Ports Authority CEO Griff Lynch at Tuesday’s board meeting, reported WSAV Savannah.
The full Ocean Terminal yard is targeted for completion by the end of 2028. In the interim, GPA will operate smaller vessels at the facility until the first phase of the container yard renovation is finished in mid-fall 2027.
A separate $29 million port-funded overpass is now open, routing trucks departing Ocean Terminal directly onto U.S. 17 and Interstate 16 and eliminating heavy port traffic from surrounding neighborhood streets. When the expanded gate facility is complete, it will feature 12 inbound lanes and six outbound lanes to reduce congestion and improve truck processing efficiency.

The Port of Savannah is currently the fourth-busiest container port in the United States and has been one of the fastest-growing on the East Coast.
Trump’s fault.
That land should have been devoted to low-income housing, and taken off the tax rolls completely, making it a net drain on taxpayers, and expanding the Socialist utopia the DSA is trying to create./s
Gavin “Ol’ JazzHands” Newsom could slow this down without breathing hard.
The other sarcastic posts, not yours, are not recognizing what a big deal this is. Our dependency on the West Coast for incoming shipments has the potential to be a major disaster. Every little bit that we can diversify our ports away from California is truly a matter of National Security
Savannah’s strongest assets are the efficiency of its single terminal operation and its location in a small metro area that doesn’t have conflicting land uses nearby like other major ports in the U.S.

It’s a very big deal. Remember during Covid when the supply lines were interrupted and the workers at the west ports refused to work to get things moving? Products and goods were sitting in the ports and not going anywhere due to California and the union’s rules and regulations.
The Savannah ports started picking up the slack and made a big difference in getting those products moving. Over the past few years, they’ve increased their capability to serve more ships and are going to really boost business in the southeast.
| Hey Alberta... I wonder if the rail and highway infrastructure is there to enable a huge increase in container offload volume? What do you think? |
Is this a new bridge over the Savannah River?
