My former church has a large Social Justice group. It’s the equivalent of a rigged church softball team with non-members being involved. They bounce from one political hot button item to another like a pinball.
I asked our pastor, associate pastor, and the older folks in my church what we could do to stop the modern Moloch worship. They kept putting it off saying, "We'll look into it." After about a year of me trying to persuade them, the pastor told me "Go out that door and don't come back."
A decade later, that local Methodist church became one of the many churches that left the hedonism promoting United Methodist Conference and joined the more Bible-centric Global Methodist Conference. I couldn't be prouder of 'em!

We stayed in the UMC because we like our pastor. We are so small, the UMC doesn’t care about us. Our pastor is so good, he will probably be moved up soon. We’ll decide what to do after that. My guess is we will get another person right out of seminary which worked well for us. They tend to be more mainstream than the Gen X Virtue Signalers.
This was all done a long time ago under Obama and Clinton.

It's looking to shape up to be like the 1st and 2nd great awakenings. Part of that is what this article is about and what I experienced. The God-denying "enlightened" clique always tries to undermine righteousness and instill into churches the Romans 1:18-32 cultural death spiral and use them to push their control. In the 1st great awakening, new denominations were formed to get away from the British crown's control of the Anglican church. When the good people in those denominations try to reform it, they're pushed out.
That's exactly what happened to Anglican bishop John Wesley in the first great awakening when he was pushing holiness. He wanted leaders to have a more rigorous habit of praying and Bible reading (enough for the nay-sayers around him to refer to Wesley and his pals as "methodists", and insult that Wesley took as a badge of honor). Wesley also wanted to allow the drunkards to attend church (while sober, obviously), yet teach the drunkards to give up drinking and get addicted to God's Spirit. The message is open to all -- but don't define people by their sin. We encourage lives away from sin (unlike the woke libtards today). Much of the first sexual revolution went away among whites during the first great awakening.
In the 2nd Great Awakening, the person who earned the nickname "Most Mobbed Man in America" wasn't a wife-beater. It was a pastor, Theodore Dwight Weld. Why was he attacked so frequently? He preached abolition. (Never let the left own the slavery discussion. The abolition movement was a church movement and us Christians should chest-thump it.). With it was more holiness. The second great awakening was successful in encouraging blacks to change their sex lives too. This was even with "pastors" telling blacks to keep making babies out of wedlock willy nilly (to breed future slaves). No doubt related to God hearing their prayers for abolition.
During the 3rd Great Awakening, the church led the civil rights movement to end segregation. That was a good thing, except that they let themselves get distracted by that and not promote a change in culture back to God. Thus we still have the modern sexual revolution. How's that working out for blacks, by the way? How's that working for everyone else?
We cannot make that mistake this time. Even if I support church led political movements (i.e. pro-life), our first priority has to be Romans 1:16 -- being unashamed of the gospely, and our second priority has to be verse 17 -- living holy lives. That fixes the cultural death spiral detailed in the rest of Romans 1 (sexual perversion, gay sexual perversion, murder, slander, etc.) more than a political movement.

IMHO One Great Awakening was when the church began to move away from preaching “earning your way into Heaven” in favor of Grace. I can remember loads of sermons back in the day condemning everything except tobacco (It was North Carolina). I knew several older people who believed in “earning Heaven” because that is how they grew up. Preaching Grace was unheard of back then. You had to quit doing all the things that church didn’t like.
By the time I hit my 30’s, I began to hear more about Grace.

Maybe they were destined to die. They turned into vast Virtue Signaling muppets with their adulterous devotion to latest trends and hot narratives, always seeking the approval of the “cool kids”. They are drunk on old wine but the cellar is nearly empty. You can’t tickle those liberal ears forever. Eventually, they just move on.

It was not the WCC that killed the mainstream denominations. They did it to themselves by embracing the low view of Christ—ie that he was just a man via what was known as the higher criticism school in the early decades of the 20th century. this new improved “enlightened” view was the seminary’s response to the next door university embrace of atheism.
imho all that is unwinding. the glory days of atheism have passed and so too has the low view of Christ lost its “modern” lustre. if for no other reason that the science is shifting in favor of God at the academy. also right now the academy is in decline.
The catholics will be first in line to tow the democrats line....they will literally do (and believe) anything if someone writes them a check.
