Coupled with the rapid descent gives the appearance of an engine failure.
An engine failure from a 3-foot hover is no biggie because there's momentum enough in the spinning rotors to cushion the landing.
And an engine failure at altitude in cruise flight is manageable because when the engine quits the helicopter becomes a gyrocopter; airspeed keeps the rotors spinning so it retains enough rotor momentum to cushion the landing. You've got a high sink rate but that's okay because you've still got the one shot at cushioning the landing.
But an engine failure at a high hover ba-a-a-a-ad ju-ju because you've got no forward airspeed to keep the fan spinning. All you've got to cushion your landing is the momentum that was in the rotors at the instant the engine failed, which is just enough to cushion the landing but not when you've had the rate of descent build up after a long fall. Plus the rotors continue to slow during the fall.
The only thing that will conserve rotor rpm is forward airspeed, and you got none. So you've got to lower the nose to pick up airspeed, but there are two problems with that.
1. rotor rpm will be decaying fast, which means you're losing lift fast, and
2. the ground comes up all the faster when you lower the nose.
If you don't have enough altitude to recover significant airspeed before reaching the ground, you're out of options.
All very calm and without any real panic.
