There’s a group to thank for August’s blockbuster jobs report: women.
Women accounted for 158,000 — or around 98% — of the 162,000 jobs added in the month, according to a CNBC analysis of data released Friday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Men represent the remaining 4,000 net positions added, meaning their contribution to overall payroll growth was nearly 40 times smaller.
The Economic Security Project, a progressive nonprofit, first pointed out the anomaly in Friday’s data.
With Friday’s report, the gap between the number of jobs held by women compared with men climbed to levels never before seen, according to Laura Ullrich, director of economic research at the Indeed Hiring Lab.
“We are in the midst of a shift,” Ullrich said. “It is changing right before our eyes.”
Women outperform
Friday’s report offers the latest signal of how much momentum women are gaining in an otherwise lackluster job market.
Compared with 12 months ago, the BLS found that the level of employed women has grown by more than 870,000 on a seasonally adjusted basis. The male gender has lost nearly 1.5 million employed workers over the same timeframe.
Part of the recent outperformance among women could stem from what sectors are driving labor force expansion.
Healthcare, considered the engine of labor market growth for more than a year, continued adding positions in August. Upwards of four out of every five workers in the industry are women.

There are lies, damned lies, and there are BLS statistics. I’ll wait for the revised numbers to come out.
That depends on the district. My mom had a choice…get paid all year or only for school months. She could have collected in the summer. She would have cut her arm off before she did that. Maybe things have changed.
That said, its too soon for those teaching jobs to show up—that would be in the September report.

Yes, I know that nearly all receive checks (or one big check) over the summer, but the contracts (at least the ones I signed) specify that I was being paid for the 180 or so days that school is in session. Teachers used to be given the option of 9 checks or 12, but then districts learned they could keep the interest earned if they held back 3 months’ pay. And, to be honest, most teachers weren’t/aren’t financially savvy enough to budget for three months without a paycheck.
Not just teachers. Add bus drivers, cafeteria staff, and other school related positions.

I remember a year or two ago the bus drivers and lunch ladies were trying to be eligible for unemployment here in Minnesota. I don’t think they succeeded.
Teachers here are not eligible.
If only women got jobs, at the expense of men, they’d still be complaining about the patriarchy.
DEI is still out there. It’s not as much in the open but still there.
But 98% needs some examination. In any other case it’d be assumed to be some sort of discrimination.

it’s a lot of lunch ladies and monitors for schools, I know 3 that are back at work,
Trump cut a lot of government jobs (mostly women)
and deported illegal aliens (mostly men)
So now the jobs that some of the male illegal aliens were doing are now being filled by the former government employees
