CHICAGO -- Joshua Báez spent five years working toward his first Major League at-bat.

He needed one pitch to make it unforgettable. Then, somehow, he kept going.

Báez homered on the first pitch he saw in the Majors, homered again in his second at-bat and then stepped to the plate in the sixth inning and did something nobody in Major League history had ever done.

He homered again.

Three at-bats. Three home runs. One historic introduction.

Báez became the first player in MLB history to hit three home runs in his debut, going 3-for-4 with five RBIs while powering the Cardinals to an 8-4 victory over the Cubs on Saturday afternoon at Wrigley Field.

Looks like three fast balls high up off the same pitcher, but still a remarkable achievement.

"I hit three home runs!"

(Unimpressed) "In four at-bats."

I hope he had the wit in the postgame press conference to say, “That was fun, but maybe it’s not good to peak in my first game.”

I guess that right now he’s batting .750 — which is pretty good, but I don’t think he can maintain that average.

Mind blowing, he has already earned himself a great place in the record books, a place in baseball trivia immortality even if he left today.

I had the exact thought as you.

I have a Topps 1954 #250

Ted Williams

On the back there is a ‘cartoon’ of the coach telling Williams “You’re .3998 which will round up to .400...I want you to sit-out this double header today.”

The next Frame of the cartoon Willams animatedly throws his hands down and says “No way!”

He hit 6 on 8 at bats and ended the year with a .406.

Tough guy!

That's impressive in itself!

He joins former Cardinals player Fernando Tatis in having a record that will never be broken.

I grew up as a Cardinals fan and, although I’m right-handed, I batted left-handed like my idol, Stan Musial - arguably the greatest underrated superstar in MLB history.
