Oregon State University requires undergraduate students who enrolled in summer 2025 or later to complete two “Difference, Power & Oppression” (DPO) courses as part of its Core Education curriculum.
The university’s core education requirements include “Difference, Power & Oppression Foundations” and “Difference, Power & Oppression Advanced.” Many courses can fulfill each requirement.
Professors must complete specialized training to teach DPO courses. In addition to “difference, power, and oppression,” participants in the DPO Academy learn about “feminist and critical pedagogies” and “fundamentals of curriculum transformation.”
The description of the Advanced courses explains the reasoning for the requirement.
“The inequitable distribution of social, economic, and political power in the United States and globally is sustained through systems of oppression, which represent a variety of discriminatory institutional beliefs and practices,” the description states. “These beliefs and practices obscure the origins and operations of systemic oppression in daily life, such that this inequitable power distribution is assumed to be the natural order.”
Courses that fulfill the requirement will prompt students to examine “how systemic power operates through the ascription of difference to reproduce structural inequities and how they and others in their field of study are positioned in relationship to those systems.”
The Foundations requirement “engages students in critical reflection on the complexity of the structures, institutions, and ideologies that sustain systemic oppression, discrimination, and the inequitable distribution of systemic power and resources within and across communities,” according to the university’s website.
“Such examinations will enhance and promote responsible, ethical, and anti-racist engagement in our diverse university community and society in the United States and beyond,” the description continues.
Courses that count toward the requirement include “Antiracism and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Practice,” “Disney: Gender, Race, Empire,” “Inventing Ethnic America,” “Biological and Cultural Constructions of Race,” and “Higher Education Goes Hollywood: Racial Narratives and Student Experiences.”
The description of “Antiracism and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Practice” states that students will gain “awareness and knowledge of systemic racism alongside skills related to antiracist advocacy to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion in practice.”
Students in the Disney course will examine “constructions of gender, race, class, sexuality, and nation in the animated films of Walt Disney.”
Oregon State estimates that the total cost of attendance is $38,568 for state residents and $65,013 for nonresidents. The estimates include tuition, fees, housing, food, books, transportation, and personal expenses.
Course requirements similar to “Difference, Power & Oppression” have appeared at the Yale University School of Drama, the University of Virginia, and Northern Arizona University.

Today’s colleges are participation trophy factories.
Or you could take courses that actually make you a productive citizen and make some money.
I would tell them I already got credit for those courses by being bused to a school in the black area of town in the 6th grade.
Sounds like the sort of class that you get issued a gun and a red arm band when completed.
Glancing that over, it appears that they consider it “oppression” if people rise to the top based on merit.

They meant to say..courses as part of its Core INDOCTRINATION curriculum.
It’s Oregon State. It’s what we used to call a ‘pulse school’.
That would be the one class to FAIL.
Tell them that you were absent for over half the classes and always late because you were trying not to “act white.”

They can study the institutionalized anti-white racism called "Affirmative Action", starting with the ranks of their administration and faculty.
It’s Oregon so pretty much any 2 courses?
Do they examine communist oppression of the productive class or the workers? You know planned starvation and murder for political fun?
