The endorsement of Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, likely assisted far-left Democratic candidate William Lawrence in his Tuesday night primary win in Michigan’s 7th Congressional District. The progressive will now face Republican incumbent Tom Barrett, R-Charlotte, in November’s general election.
The activist community organizer from Lansing’s leftist credentials were burnished by campaign appearances last month with fellow progressives Abdul El-Sayed, who was in a tight race for Michigan’s U.S. Senate seat against Rep. Haley Stevens, and New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Lawrence, a member of the Working Families Party and the Democratic Socialists of America, defeated Democratic opponents Matt Maasdam, a former Navy SEAL who carried the “nuclear football” for President Barack Obama, and former U.S. ambassador Bridget Brink. First-term Michigan Sen. Elissa Slotkin endorsed Maasdam. Lawrence took an early lead in the race, with the Associated Press calling the race at 11:23 p.m. with Lawrence with 42.6% of the votes cast, followed by Brink at 29.3%, and Maasdam at 28.1%.
He also raised eyebrows in early July when he asserted the Trump administration’s efforts to prohibit men from women’s sports was a conspiracy to blame transexual athletes for the current state of the economy and, inexplicably, assist the wealthy.
In comments unearthed from a podcast he hosted in 2024,Lawrence unloaded on three high-profile Democrats, describing them as “warmongers” from “the second or third circle of hell,” The Detroit News reported.
“I voted early by mail here in the critical swing state of Michigan,” Lawrence said on his Hegemonicon podcast just days before the 2024 General Election. “I voted for Kamala Harris for president, Elissa Slotkin for Senate, and Cutis Hertel for U.S. representative. Warmongers, every single one of them.
Lawrence defended his 2024 comments when contacted by The Detroit News.
“Like many voters in 2024, I was angry and frustrated with the leadership of both parties for supporting the genocide in Gaza. My statement reflects that anger,” Lawrence wrote in a statement. “As your Congressman, I will be a voice to stop arming Israel and other human rights abusers, while investing our taxpayer dollars in good housing and healthcare for Mid-Michigan.”
In other posts, Lawrence took aim at Gov. Gretchen Whitmer for working with Republicans to fund roads, and Lansing Mayor Andy Schor for “inaction on police abuses,” according to The News.
Among the major planks of his campaign was opposition to data centers, which is a flashpoint in many of Michigan’s 2026 elections..
The remarks come amid growing opposition to energy- and water-intensive data center projects across Michigan, where residents have raised concerns about electricity rates, water use, noise, light pollution, farmland and the secrecy surrounding proposed developments.
Last month, Lawrence delivered remarks during a fundraiser held by Mason Data Center Facts at Vevay Township Community Park. The organization is raising money for a legal defense fund as residents continue opposing a proposed data center and seek greater transparency about its potential effects on the community.
Lawrence said residents in Mason, Lyon Township and Howell Township have described similar experiences with proposed data center developments, saying communities often learn key details only after plans are well underway.
“It’s like there’s a plan in the making, the residents are the last to find out, there have been some people signed to non-disclosure agreements, and then the PR agents and the pushers of these deals come forward and they say, everybody, this is a great deal, just trust us,” Lawrence said.
Lawrence’s remarks differ from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s approach to data center development.
Whitmer has promoted the projects as major economic investments and rejected calls for a statewide moratorium. During a June groundbreaking for an Oracle and OpenAI-linked data center in Saline Township, a hot microphone captured the governor telling Oracle CEO Clay Magouyrk, “We’re used to people saying f*** no, and doing it anyway.”
The Saline Township development moved forward despite local opposition and litigation. The Michigan Public Service Commission, whose members were appointed by Whitmer, approved contracts related to the project through a fast-tracked process that concealed significant details from the public.
Lawrence has also gone on record to support defunding the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, despite the fact that Michigan has benefited from the largest deportation effort in U.S. history. ICE efforts have removed plenty of scammers, killers, rapists, gang members, and child molesters.
DHS’ “Worst of the Worst” database lists 285 illegal immigrants removed from the Great Lakes State with prior convictions for a wide array of heinous crimes.
They include criminals from Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico, Israel, Cuba, Laos, Iraq, Columbia, Canada, Nigeria, China, Venezuela, Sri Lanka, Burma, Ukraine, Laos, El Salvador, Sudan, Romania, Peru, Pakistan, Ecuador, Somalia, Vietnam, Jordan, Thailand, Ghana, Poland, Cambodia, Iran, India, Spain, Pakistan, Eritrea, Albania, the Ivory Coast, Dominican Republic of the Congo, Nicaragua, Lebanon, Bangladesh, Egypt, Jamaica, Malaysia, and Bhutan.
“It’s very clear that it has to be defunded,” Lawrence said in an interview shared on X.
National Republican Congressional Committee spokesman Mike Marinella expressed optimism that Barrett will defeat Lawrence, because Michigan voters will not accept a far-left, progressive candidate.

As I’ve posted a few times I’ve been rooting for that outcome (and I hoped Republicans helped that soyboi nutjob get over the top), but the way 2026 is shaping up it may become a case of “be careful what you wish for”.
Just like the Michigan Senate election.
The district which Lawrence won in is one of numerous vulnerable tossup districts which the GOP must defend this year, while Democrats have extremely few to defend — literally ONE which is currently classified as a tossup AND was not affected by redistricting. If yesterday is any indication, Democrats will hold that one tossup seat (WA-3) without much trouble at all.
The net +8 or so which Republicans will get in the House as a result of redistricting will help offset some of the disaster, and every district such as MI-7 which the GOP can keep more easily thanks to a lunatic Rat candidate is quite useful too.

What is pertinent to THIS race (the one the article is discussing) is: “Democrats have a reduced chance of winning Michigan’s 7th district now, because they nominated a radical nutbucket instead of a ‘mainstream’ candidate who may only be 99% liberal.”
Any tossup district which the GOP can actually hold this year is a blessing, and Democrats have made it as easy as possible for the GOP to hold MI-7.
But “easy as possible” is light years away from “automatic”. The seat goes from Tossup to Very Slightly Leaning Republican.

1. “Likely assisted” refers to Sanders helping his fellow Socialist win the primary. That’s all.
2. You aren’t very familiar with this district, obviously. The CD which contains Lansing has elected a GOP congressman 9 times in the 2000s so far (in 13 elections). Yes it contains all the things you stated, however it is merely a tossup (D+2 at this time), and not some urban ghetto district.
Ingham County (Lansing, East Lansing, etc.) casts only about 1/3 of the votes in the district. The rest of the areas range from fair to good for GOP candidates. But Ingham is bad enough by itself that the overall balance is still to the left. By just a little.
I know the area much too well and that’s why I detest it so much. The libtards think they’re smart, typical. I spent much of my life around Livingston County, what a difference. I’d go downtown Detroit before I’d set foot in Lansing proper.
Anyway, saw a youtube the other day from a realtor from the area that focused on Livingston Co. and is now the highest income county in all of Michigan. I can remember from high school track meets that the area was so poor that the high schools around there in the 70’s were dirt/cinder. Wow.
Livingston is, and has been in recent years, the best county in the state in many ways.
It grew like a weed in the 1990s but fortunately the mass invasion has slowed since then and growth has been more manageable — it’s important for an area to not grow TOO quickly because bad people *always* (like a cancer) follow the good people to nice, new areas and the effect can be overwhelming.
Dingbat got less than half in a primary. Between him, Al-boomboom, and the witches 3 this is a broken glass election for conservatives and moderates vs the red-green crazies.
I think the youth are desperate. Everything is so expensive. They are willing to try anything to change their current disaster.
I remember when I was young most things were out of reach. I had to work, save and invest for years before I could enjoy the lifestyle I have now. It did NOT happen overnight. It literally took decades.
My general feeling is that if this gets any more traction these Marxists should be arrested for treason against the US and for collusion to discard the US Constitution. Both are true. The world has already litigated the stupidity and destructiveness of Marxism, over and over. We have zero obligation as a nation to sit back and allow dissolution of the freedoms and right to self-determinism that were paid for by the blood of patriots.
