Modern semiautomatic firearms are flying off the shelves in Colorado in the days before a new "permit to purchase" scheme goes into effect, according to a local media outlet.
In April 2025, Democratic Colorado Gov. Jared Polis signed legislation initially introduced as an outright ban on so-called "assault weapons" that requires anyone wishing to buy a modern semiautomatic firearm, including the AR-15 rifle, to first receive a firearms safety course eligibility card, then to complete a firearms safety course within five years. One firearms dealer had restocked three times, according to the Pikes Peak Courier.
"We are jam-packed," Justin Green, owner of SDS Guns in Colorado Springs, told the Courier.
Over 6500 requests for background checks were pending at the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI), with the state's three day waiting period making the last day to purchase a semiautomatic firearm July 28, the Courier reported. The new requirements include a training course of 12 hours that could cost up to $500, according to the Courier.

Yeah I was totally leaning on Mr K (not the one on this forum) to get another pistol before this law goes into effect.
And he’s going to pick up his new gun today! :) (Which is actually not affected by the law because it’s a revolver.)

More and more, I am convinced that there is a conspiracy between gun manufacturers and Leftwing Democrats because the only real result of these draconian gun control laws is to create a spike in gun purchases while they are being debated and before they go into effect. Ultimately, they are found to be unconstitutional.

You may be right. I think Colt Firearms half-jokingly gave Bill Clinton a “Salesman of the Year” award back when he was going after AR-15s.
It’s interesting to note the requirements for having a firearm in Jared’s home country of Israel:

“Licensing Restrictions: The Firearms Licensing Department rejects approximately 40% of applications. Applicants must be Israeli citizens or permanent residents (with residency periods of 3–45 years depending on service status), speak basic Hebrew, and pass medical and psychological evaluations”

“Despite the high visibility of armed soldiers and the rise in civilian licenses (after the Hamas attacks), only about 2.6% of the adult population holds a personal firearm license. The system is designed to balance national security needs with low homicide rates, contrasting sharply with the U.S. model where gun ownership is viewed as a right rather than a privilege contingent on state approval”
An American Constitutionalist might point out the similarities in the laws Polis has imposed to the Israeli laws here noted.

How onerous is it to notify the state that the firearm was lost in a tragic boating accident, so they can drop it from their records?

If the records at A, B & C are checked at the same time, it can only mean a background check was done by an agency for a gun purchases.
That background check agency doesn’t keep records as it is forbidden to do so by law, but A, B & C all do.
If you lose your gun in a boating mishap, the federal government could deny you old age benefits as per Nestor.

The EU pressured Switzerland to require registration of military guns and handguns. The Swiss complied. Now their gun laws are still much better than most of Europe, but not as good as most of the USA.

Really? I can’t buy a pistol or a scary AR-15 type rifle with a pistol grip. Here in Minnesota in order to buy those you need a permit to purchase. That means every year you have to go to the police/sheriffs department and fill out a lot of paperwork. They do a background check and you get a permit. It’s been that way for a long time.
