BOMBSHELL: KOAT Lands CBS + Keeps ABC - KRQE Faces a Brutal New Reality (ABQ New Mexico stations)
No Doubt About It With Mark Ronchetti ^ | July 23, 2026 | Mark Ronchetti

Posted on 07/23/2026 2:48:11 PM PDT by CedarDave

BREAKING: KRQE has lost the CBS affiliation after 72 years — and it's moving to KOAT, making Channel 7 the undisputed juggernaut of New Mexico television. Mark Ronchetti spent 15+ years at KRQE and also worked at KOAT. Sources in both buildings. Nobody else can break this down from the inside.

CBS told Nexstar the money wasn't enough. Hearst stepped up and wrote the check. Now KOAT holds BOTH major networks — and KRQE goes independent.

Is one station holding both major networks good for New Mexico — or a consolidation problem nobody's talking about?

Lots of fallout yet to come with a studio location and staffing TBD. Both stations are seen throughout the state with the exception of the Las Cruces area, and KRQE also has a satellite station in Durango, CO.

Nexstar will use this in the lawsuit they are facing from the states.

https://www.naag.org/multistate-case/plaintiff-states-v-nexstar-media-group-inc-and-tegna-inc/

According to the states’ allegations, the proposed merger would result in Nexstar owning more than one affiliate of the “Big 4” stations (FOX, NBC, ABC and CBS) in 31 Designated Market Areas, including 11 that would impact the plaintiff states.

...tempest in a teapot: who watches network TV anymore, anyway?...

This is a symptom of exactly that. If people were watching it nobody could have taken it over. This is actually historic. The beginning of the end of Network TV?

How does one station broadcast two different networks at the same time? I'm not a broadcaster so i don't know if that's even possible --- from the same tower or do you need two?

Once again, I don't know, but I suspect broadcast (free) TV may be going away.

The answer is the digital signal is multiplexed. KOAT will likely add the CBS programing in a similar manner. From Wikipedia:

KOAT-TV’s transmitter is located on Sandia Crest, northeast of Albuquerque. The station’s signal is multiplexed:
Subchannels of KOAT-TV
Channel Res. Short name Programming
7.1 1080i KOAT-DT ABC
7.2 480i Estrell Estrella TV
7.3 480i TCN True Crime Network
7.5 480i Story Story Television
7.6 480i QVC QVC

I actually ‘worked for’ KGGM TV (what KRQE was before 1992) for a year back in the late’80s.

Actually an ‘independent contractor: Writer, co-Producer, occasional video editor and (unfortunately) ‘On Air (pseudo) talent’ of a weekly business show. I hated the latter part, but the money was decent. The Hebenstreit family that owned the station was pretty easy to work for / with.

Way back when, LBJ called he shots for KLBJ in Austin TX. That was the only TV station in the market and so he cherry-picked programs from 2 or 3 networks. But they dared not call it a monopoly.

So I guess there is precedent.
