I have used USAA for my auto insurance for 11 years and have been reasonably satisfied with them.
However this morning I got an email from them informing me my auto insurance rate is going up by 20%, TWENTY PERCENT!
I have no traffic violations, speeding tickets or other violations and the only time I've used them was 9 years ago with a car tow.
My credit score is 700+ BUT I am turning 75 years old this month and that has to be the reason for the huge rate increase.
Although I've been loyal to USAA I'd like some other auto insurance companies that FReepers recommend, thanks in advance!

Change insurance companies. Liberty did this to my homeowner’s years ago, and I had no problem beating the rate.
We use AAA.
Yeah, prices are going up everywhere. Where are you located? Some places, like California, make business especially expensive.
Your age may also be a factor. You’re on the other side of the “adults make better drivers” curve.
You should probably be changing insurance companies every year, I started 4-5 years ago and have saved a lot of money for identical coverage. I do the same with cellular and internet providers.
Mine jumped too without explanation.
I’ve got USAA for everything but my house.
They dropped us because of claims in our zip code (down in the valley it flooded badly). If it floods at my house up on top of the mountain, we need to build an ark because the world is over.
I’ve been increasingly displeased with them.
They went full DEI and it’s been down hill ever since.
Plaintiffs’ bar (lawyers). They get around 50% of insurance settlements for making a couple of phone calls. They spend billions on advertising. They make billions from your insurance payments. This must change because it is out of control.
I already have AAA roadside services, I’ll check them out for insurance, thanks!
I believe a State requiring people to have insurance before driving on the road is a violation of fundamental human rights principles.
A state should not require insurance to use the public ways. Insurance does not make an accident less likely, if anything it makes accidents more likely, because people become disassociated from the financial concerns of having an accident, and so are less likely to be as careful if they had to pay for the damages themselves.
I see insurance as a form of "prior restraint", compelling an action before any liability has occurred.
I also see it as gambling, and I am morally opposed to gambling.
Try Progressive. I saved a lot last year by going with them, and I’m 80 so age didn’t cause exorbitant rates with them.
I had a recent accident. Not my fault. Idiot ran through a stop sign. My car is totaled. (2025 Midrange SUV).
State Farm has changed the way they handle claims. You don’t use the agent. In fact, the agent has no way to learn anything about your claim.
They have different departments depending on if the portion of the claim is medical or whatever. Since mine is a totaled vehicle I have been assigned a claim agent who literally NEVER answers the phone. NEVER. You can leave a message and she may call you back, today or tomorrow.
But, by god, if you miss HER call, you’ve been a bad little boy.
It totally pisses me off that they evidently don’t have enough claim agents to handle their claims with some sense of customer care.
The customer should not have to be sitting by the phone in preparation for the agent calling. The agency should have enough agents to handle claims with minimal waiting/inconvenience. Who’s the customer and who’s the business?
She did call back at one point. I took the call (didn’t say State Farm on Caller ID) and the voice said a first name different from mine, so I hung up. Then got a call back from the same number and didn’t answer it. She left a voice mail laughing at her idiocy of calling me the wrong name.. With an offer to call back. Which I’ve already proved at least a half dozen times - you don’t actually GET a person when you call.
If USAA has actual people to handle the claims I’d stick with them. The 20 percent increase is probably worth it if you need to TALK TO A PERSON/AGENT.

Here’s one source:
And of course vehicle, driving record, and how much coverage you want will come into effect. But it’s a start.

Unfortunately USAA has become another company where bean counter rule and the once stellar personalized customer service has become subservient to the bureaucracy that runs the company. I’ve been with them over 50 years.
First step I would take is to call them and ask for an explanation of your increase. I have done that in the past and obtained a review of my account at a higher level.
As others have stated, getting quotes from other firms provides options. I’ve moved one vehicle to Progressive. Talk to an independent insurance agent who represents several companies and can provide you with several quotes from reputable companies.
What kind of car do you drive? Does the manufacturer record your driving stats and sell to insurance companies? Perhaps you are driving too fast (or slow) or driving in areas where collisions, thefts, etc. are a higher risk.
They dropped us because of claims in our zip code (down in the valley it flooded badly). If it floods at my house up on top of the mountain, we need to build an ark because the world is over.

Oh, and State Farm now sends a two page bill when you owe on a vehicle. However, NO WHERE ON THE BILL does it state which vehicle it is for (I have more than one).
And if I desire to have proof of insurance in hard copy for my vehicle I need to request it.
And they send this 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper that looks like a 12th generation Xerox copy that is almost completely illegible.
Age, change of (newer) vehicle, etc. all impact their rates....as does the fact that repairing modern vehicles is more expensive than in years past. All the safety feature sensors, like radar/cameras/etc., have to be recalibrated and the removal/reinstall takes time.
Remember, insurance is pooling money to cover costs of damage to all those vehicles & customers under the insurance, and the price of a new vehicle is ~$45,000.
Sometimes it’s just healthy to switch every few years - loyalty isn’t repaid.
By law, they have to disclose why the rates increased.
