More ignorance from the New York Times: “Without Climate Change, U.S. Heat Wave Called ‘Virtually Impossible.”
Heat and humidity as severe, prolonged and far-reaching as this week’s would have been “virtually impossible” in the Northeast and eastern Canada before humans began warming the planet, a team of scientists said on Friday.
***
To estimate how much climate change increased the likelihood of this week’s sweltering conditions, the scientists analyzed records of a measurement of heat stress called “wet bulb globe temperature,” a figure that accounts for humidity, wind and direct sunlight. Given that the heat wave is still unfolding, the researchers combined weather observations and forecast data.
Of course they did.
The Times article sounds the usual warnings about fossil fuels and global warming. Remarkably, however, it fails to cite any actual data regarding heat waves. Are heat waves getting more frequent or more severe?
No, they aren’t. Heat waves peaked in the 30s and 50s and generally have been in decline since then:
Cold snaps have declined too, for what that is worth.
Why do some people fall for unscientific nonsense about heat waves? Because of air conditioning. Seventy years ago, the temperature may actually have been higher, but hardly anyone had air conditioning. So our bodies acclimated to the heat over the spring and summer. Today, we spend most of our time indoors, likely at around 68 degrees. Then, when we step outside and it is 90 instead of 68, we say OMG! The heat is intolerable! Peddlers of global warming misinformation like the New York Times are happy to take advantage of that phenomenon.
The Times actually says one thing that is true:
“On America’s 250th birthday, our study gives a clear reality check,” said Theodore Keeping, a climate scientist at Imperial College London who worked on the analysis. “The climate the country has today is fundamentally different to the one it had when the founding fathers signed the Declaration of Independence.”
Correct. That is because in 1776, we were in the depths of the Little Ice Age. Temperatures were abnormally low. Remember the stories you read in your youth about how cold it was at Valley Forge? And Washington crossing the Delaware through the ice?
Yeah, those stories were true. Happily, the Earth has now returned to more normal temperatures, although it is still colder now than it has been the large majority of the time since the end of the last Ice Age.
For a long time I have not bothered to attack the Minneapolis Minnesota Star Tribune, because I see it as a waste of time. Always punch up, Ronald Reagan said, never punch down. Criticizing the Strib is punching down. I may soon get to the same point with the New York Times. The Times is such a pathetic rag that before long, it may not be worth attacking.

I have a strong hunch that their calculations have not been published anywhere.
BTW the heatwave that the east coast and Midwest have been experiencing will be over after tomorrow.
Most libtards live over endless sheets of concrete. That adds five degrees or so but the dewpoint should be lower.
And always remember, children, hot weather is climate but cold weather is just weather.
But awesome fodder for those delicious grant$$$ they simply can't get enough of.
Good thing is it should help keep hurricanes below average.
It’s Summer ,D’oh
Ugh this is so ridiculous. I remember numerous summers warmer than this one. Every time it gets warm this idiotic BS
It is only about 100 in Phoenix.
We all rejoicing about how pleasant it is!
In 1936 some 5000 people died in the heat wave in the US. Many in Canada also died. Temps over 100.
The center of the continent was once covered in water....🙄😵💫😉
Here's the best I could do
Happy Independence Day!
Freedom bump.
I like the one in the bikini.
Strange since glaciers once extended down into what is now central Ohio. And according to good sources provided by AI, they were up to a mile thick. Long before there were any humans in the Western Hemisphere. Something caused a lot of warming that went on for long periods of time to melt all that ice.
Shhhh. That is an inconvenient set of information.
It’s been a very mild summer so far here in the Big Valley.
Has not hit 100 yet.
In the last 30 days, at least 15 have been in the 80s.
They voted for this clown, now let them stew in their own juices as they sweat out these hot days of summer. See what it was like in the heat waves of the past!
1882, 1896, 1911, 1936, 1953. And no AC.
This Heatwave also came with more rain in the summer, so that’s better economy as far as my area is concerned.
If rains come down its way better this time of year than a drought.
In my hometown, the highest temp ever recorded was 111, and that was in 1952. It hasn’t been that hot since.
