The on-court standoff between Sophie Cunningham and DeWanna Bonner became the highlight of the Indiana Fever's 86-77 victory over the Phoenix Mercury over a week ago. The heated moment went viral overnight as an instant hit.
Naturally, fans began speculating about what sparked the exchange. Cunningham finally put those theories to rest, revealing that it was simply a lighthearted attempt to get under Bonner's skin. Nothing more, nothing less.
Cunningham stepped into an enforcer-type role with the Fever as soon as Caitlin Clark arrived in Indiana. Against her former team, Sophie saw an opportunity to need one of her old teammates. Bonner and Cunningham spent a full season at Phoenix in 2019 and nine games with the Fever in 2025.
The former was traded back to the Mercury and has spent the past two and a half seasons in Arizona. The familiarity made DB the perfect target. And make no mistake, Sophie knew exactly which buttons to push.
"DB was the one that really did something extra and then Caitlin got the tech," Cunningham said on "The Show Me Something" podcast, dramatizing Bonner's actions by swinging her left shoulder. "So, I walked out there and I was really talking to the ref… I was like, 'I know Caitlin got a tech, but why she didn't get one?' Because if Caitlin's gonna get one, then she should get one. It shouldn't be one or the other."
And that was when all playful hell got loose. Bonner didn't like Cunningham pointing at her like that, so the former made the latter know. Needless to say, it was a rookie mistake by the 17-year veteran.
"She was like, 'Don't you point at me.' I was like, 'Oh, shouldn't have said that.'

The finger of fatigue.
I guess Sophie Cunningham just doesn’t get it. Same goes for Caitlin Clark. The many black racist players in the WNBA hate you. And the cavalry won’t be coming to the rescue.
Good luck, ladies.
You’re going to need it.
And she’s on the injury report (illness).
Larry Bird and Kevin McHale didn’t need any special scrutiny.
They took care of matters themselves, giving as good as they got.
I suspect they both know a lot more than they're letting on. They just can't say it publicly. The reality is they are professional basketball players, and if they want to keep playing, they have to know how hard they can push back. Cunningham apparently is pretty good at that.
Someone had to point that out and Sophia did!
She's pushing back more and if the WNBA decides to retaliate, this is a case where the Feds may get involved due to civil rights violations.
The memes that have come from this will live for ages. I saw one where she’s standing next to Michelle Obama pointing to the men’s room
She’s better than super girl.
“I suspect they both know a lot more than they’re letting on.“
I suspect that what they know is that jealous women and deviants and angry to boot are not even remotely analogous to the men in the NBA. Men will ride the hell out of anyone who thinks he’s all that but if the target rises to the challenge ESPECIALLY if he has the skills to walk the walk the men will give him his props. Those animals in the WNBA lack a man’s fundamental honor. They’ll end her career if they have to.
No…this is all performance…to keep people interested in the WNBA. Absent this made up controversy, no one would pay attention, at all. They (protagonist, antagonist) are all laughing all the way to the bank saying, “keep watching these ‘fights’”.
True, they’re funny, but they will disappear into the dustbin of memes, shortly.
The real picture is when she’s pointing and turns her head with her eyes still focused. It’s funny.
Could it be wink-wink? The league needs the publicity.
Need I spell out the truth? Between Sophie Cunningham and DeWanna Bonner which one would you bang? Which one would a black man marry?
I’m sure there are some other women in the WNBA who don’t side with the crew going after Clark because she is white and straight. So Clark and Cunningham are careful in what they say so it doesn’t look like they’re attacking every black and/or lesbian player. Just the ones going after them.
I went to a fight and a WNBA game broke out.
What? She gets it. We all do.
She better watch out. Disrespecting a Negro can get you stabbed.
Yes, my fault. My post #4 comment was tongue-in-cheek. I should have put this at the end:
