House cancels votes for remainder of week, sends lawmakers home amid tension over SAVE America Act

The House was initially expected to have votes on Wednesday and Thursday, but House Republican leaders canceled those votes and have now sent lawmakers home after final votes took place at 5:15 p.m. Eastern.

he House on Tuesday evening canceled votes for the remainder of the week amid tensions over the SAVE America Act, which means lawmakers can go home for the Fourth of July holiday and a week-long recess next week.

The House was initially expected to have votes on Wednesday and Thursday, but House Republican leaders canceled those votes and have now sent lawmakers home after final votes took place at 5:15 p.m. Eastern.

The move comes after GOP rebels sank a procedural vote that would have advanced the annual defense authorization bill earlier in the day, according to The Hill. They also blocked plans to advance a bill funding the State Department and national security.

“It makes no sense for us to stop our very important progress forward from House Republicans, because some Senate Democrats are refusing to do their job,” House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters after the procedural vote on the defense bill.

The move also comes after Johnson warned Republican lawmakers on Monday not to hold up the chamber's agenda in hopes of getting the Senate to pass the SAVE America Act, saying that doing so would be "self-defeating."

Johnson said he plans to include aspects of the SAVE America Act in the massive budget reconciliation bill later this year, which would help dodge the 60-vote threshold that Republicans need in the Senate.

Some Republicans have warned Johnson not to use the reconciliation process because it would not pass the Byrd Rule, which requires anything included in a reconciliation bill to be a budgetary matter.

"This cannot be done. It is impossible," Florida GOP Rep. Anna Paulina Luna insisted on X. "It will not pass the Byrd bath. I have amendments that should be made in order."

The decision to send lawmakers home early also comes after House leadership made the same decision last week because some Republicans blocked action on two funding bills.

It’s the Independence Day weekend. I doubt they ever planned to work at all on Wednesay or Thursday. I am surprised they even showed up on Monday!

I think the 4th of July holiday period and maybe the heat wave had more to do with it

What is amazing is that there are people that think the SAVE act has even a 1% chance of passing. All they have to do is ride until November... 0 chance of it passing.

Likely. It’s supposed to be record breaking heat in DC like 116 with the heat index factor thru the 5th. I feel bad for Trump who did a great job with the 250th Great America State Fair and no one is going in part because of the heat (and the other reason, which is even sadder) is the hate Trump and boycott him factor). I’ve heard it’s really nice but almost empty. Festivities for the remainder of the week/holiday ate going to be affected as well as it gets even hotter.

But I’m supposed to vote for these clowns but they won’t vote on having fair elections.
Good luck with that

When I get mad on my job and go home, the job is gone when I return. I think it’s time for both the Senate and the house to understand. The people are fed up with this.

Thune will do everything he can to block the SAVE America Act.

Speaker Johnson also might be blocking it (e.g., pretending it can go thru Reconciliation), but he is more subtle.

We need to proceed as if the system were completely broken, because it is.

What is amazing is that there are people that think the SAVE act has even a 1% chance of passing

There are two Republican parties.

There is the Actually Existing Republican Party (GOP).

Then there is the FR Imaginary Republican Party (FRiGOP).

There are many, many people here who are members of the FRiGOP. They believe, against all evidence, that GOP Members of Congress are loyal allies who, for inexplicable reasons, keep failing to do things that would be good for America.

Members of the FRiGOP cannot understand why the SAVE Act (which you correctly point out cannot pass this Congress under any circumstances) just needs another Truth Social post to cross the finish line, and won't stop posting about it.

These are revolutionary times.

Only one party wants to play. It's very sad.

535 self aggrandizing worthless pukes.

They cost taxpayers about $7 billion dollars a year.

The damage they do to the nation every year is easily 20 or 30 times larger than that.

The overall budget for the U.S. Congress and Senate falls under the Legislative Branch Appropriations Act. For the most recent appropriations, the base budget is set at roughly $7 billion.

This encompasses all operations, buildings, offices, supplies, and transportation for both chambers, plus associated support, personal expenses, etc.

Congressional Staffs: Total is about 9,500 employees

US Representatives have about 20-22 staff members each.
They are authorized to hire up to 18 permanent employees and 4 part-time or shared employees.

Senatorial Staffs: Total is around 4,000 to 5,000 employees

US Senate staffs average 30 to 40 staff members (usually between 20 and 60).

There is no statutory limit on the number of staff a Senator can employ.
