Hundreds of years ago, salt could only be afforded by the wealthy. Same thing with sugar. Tea as well, once it was introduced to the west. People used to lock those items away.

But in colonial America lobsters just washed up on the beaches. According to History.com:
Dirt-cheap because they were so copious, lobsters were routinely fed to prisoners, apprentices, slaves and children during the colonial era and beyond. In Massachusetts, some servants allegedly sought to avoid lobster-heavy diets by including stipulations in their contracts that they would only be served the shellfish twice a week.

Same thing with oysters, and not just in Colonial America, but in medieval Europe, especially for those people who lived along the coast. Oysters were a staple in their diet. They were a delicacy to the Romans, who built their own oyster beds, because they enjoyed them so much.
