Can Arabs wage a Holy War?

Lake Success, L.I., 29. (By Ruth Karpf, Special Correspondent for *La Patrie*).

The Arabs have drawn their scimitars and brandish them beneath the very eyes of the United Nations. They drew them on the day the United Nations voted to partition Palestine, and they made them flash—for the first time in the eyes of the world—during the meetings of the General Assembly, when spokesperson after spokesperson for the Arab nations hurled a challenge at the United Nations, whose decisions and authority they had, only moments before, sworn to respect.

Thank you very much and God bless you.

They threatened to fight the decision and to sever their international agreements. And "in the name of Allah," they have, since then, thrown bombs at buses, burned and ravaged fields, homes, and properties, and murdered men, women, and children in Palestine. Such was the beginning of the "holy war" that Arab spokespersons promise to unleash in Palestine, throughout the Middle East, and across the globe—wherever believers kneel five times a day and declare that "Allah is great and Muhammad is His Pr0phet."

The question haunting the terrified minds of most inhabitants of the Middle East—as well as the weary minds of the men of peace at Lake Success—is this: What is the true nature of this holy war? Who seeks to unleash it, and why? And will they be able to do so?

By compiling the facts as they actually exist in the Middle East—in contrast to the propaganda and rhetoric of the Arabs—the answer to that final question appears to be a tentative "no." For the moment, they will be unable to wage their holy war. [...]

Finally, there is Palestine itself. The Arabs of Palestine possess no army. They have two semi-military youth organizations—the Futuwah and the Nejjada—numbering 10,000 members, and there are considerable quantities of knives and rifles hidden in almost every Arab village in the country. But the inhabitants of these villages remember that during the "last battle for Arab independence in Palestine" (financed by the Axis), from 1936 to 1939, there were three times as many Arabs of those killed were Jews and Englishmen, and they are not particularly keen on a new conflict with their Jewish neighbors, with whom they have lived in peace. During the final weeks of the holy war, nearly a thousand Arab villages in Palestine requested "peace pacts" from their Jewish neighbors. However, there is significant internal rivalry and conflict among the small group of Arab families who "represent" the Arabs of Palestine...

...This spirit of conquest is an inspiration drawn directly from the Quran.

Today, the Muslim Brotherhood is growing. It is growing because it is the first movement in the Middle East to appeal to the masses, and because members of the Arab ruling classes support it with money, weapons, and moral encouragement. None of the Arab governments have apparently realized that, in nurturing the Muslim Brotherhood, they are fostering a fascist Frankenstein—one that will likely treat them exactly as Hitler treated the people who helped him rise to power. [Continued] The Muslim Brotherhood, on the other hand, knows exactly what it has to do. Its strategy for eventual global conquest is divided into well-defined tactical maneuvers, of which the struggle against a progressive, semi-socialist Palestine is one of the most important. The strategy to be employed against a Jewish Palestine—which is, and would always remain, a democratic thorn in the side of the fascist-Muslim Middle East that the Brotherhood desires—has been defined by the organization's spiritual and political leader, Amin al-Husseini (the former Mufti of Jerusalem), with the active collaboration of Hitler and Goebbels.

Husseini spent the war years in Berlin, directing the Axis propaganda campaign toward the Muslim world; late in 1944, he signed a pact with Hitler—copies of which are currently in the possession of the U.S. State Department and the Foreign Office—promising and outlining how he would continue to pursue the Nazi objectives of dividing East and West and "liquidating" the Jews. Recent reports from Palestine have confirmed this plan. They reveal that some of the Arabs who infiltrated Palestine from Syria were led by German officers.

Such, then, is the true nature of the holy war. It is a coalition of feudal governments—possessing international prestige, organizing their forces but not yet commanding strong armies—and a growing movement of fanatical, illiterate, exploited, and bewildered masses, led by a group of men with Nazi leanings who aspire to the fascist goal of global conquest. This is a coalition that bodes ill for everyone; and unless all the nations of the United Nations—which supported the partition of Palestine—are prepared to support its implementation, they may well see the holy war against the Jewish state in Palestine transform into a diabolical war against everything the United Nations stands for. And the peoples of the world may see their romantic notion of a scimitar-wielding sheikh turn into the grim reality of an Arab swastika—that of the Muslim Brotherhood—flying from North Africa to Pakistan, and from Turkey to the Indian Ocean.

On the flip side, virulent antisemitism in Europe has not needed any Arab ‘help.’
