When federal agencies closed their doors for a record-setting 43 days last fall, one person saw an opportunity.
An individual is awaiting trial after burglarizing the Securities and Exchange Commission during last year’s government shutdown. The alleged thief did not wait long before entering the SEC regional office in Fort Worth, Texas, as the individual entered the building during the shutdown’s first week.
A contracted security officer was present for the incident, but failed to stop the person, identify them or sign them in, as building protocols require, the SEC’s inspector general said. The burglar “bypassed” a locked door, walked past the security guard and entered the SEC’s office suite. The security guard failed to escort the individual through the building and in the elevators, also in contravention of the building’s security policies.
The person then stole four laptops valued at more than $5,000, a bluetooth earpiece and a rolling briefcase.
Federal employees are generally prohibited from using their government devices during a shutdown if they are placed in non-working furlough status, but are required to report to their offices on the first day of a lapse to ensure their devices are secured. SEC furloughed 88% of its workforce during the most recent funding lapse, though an IG official was not aware of how many employees may have been reporting to the office during the burglary.

The makings of an inside job.
I wonder what information was on the laptops. Used laptops are not particularly valuable. If they cost $5000 new, thy are probably worth $1000, at most, used.
The information contained on SEC laptops.... could be worth much, much more...
“The makings of an inside job.”
We have top men on the case.
Yawn!...
What about the Congressmen and Senators who robbed the American taxpayers during the government shutdown???
Sure sounds like that to me.
How is it they were so familiar as to know they could do this, know what was there to steal. How does one carry out so much stuff and breeze by on the way out with it?
This person been there before? Works there?
I wouldn’t even figure I’d get past security seeing them all there.
Great security. DEI hires? Inside job? Just lazy?
I’d say inside job. These in-house computers were just crap, except for the data they contain, which would be perfect for insider trading. Why I have the scooby reveal as Mr. Pelosi.
The Big Ten?
Reasonable.
Hope the football season starts on time.........oh, wait....wrong SEC!.............🙄
