Independent Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt's impressive showing in the debate with his two main rivals for the job has shaken up the race. First, in an online poll 90% of debate viewers declared Pratt the winner of the debate. Second, both the incumbent Mayor Karen Bass (Democrat) and Councilmember Nithya Raman (Socialist) have dropped out of a second scheduled debate. Third, further debates have been canceled. Fourth, Pratt's campaign ads are being called some of the best political commercials ever seen.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris announced her endorsement of Karen Bass: "Mayor Karen Bass is the leader Los Angeles needs right now. She has done what so many said couldn't be done. She is dedicating the land cleared by last year's fires to building high-density housing for the homeless. She has steadfastly opposed the deportation of our immigrant neighbors by federal goons. She favors second chances for repeat offenders. She's everything one could want for a progressive future in Los Angeles. She has my full support for re-election."
The LA County Federation of Labor has aired an attack ad warning voters that "Pratt opposes using tax funds to build housing for the homeless. Pratt thinks LA needs thousands more police officers rather than more social workers. Say no to these radical ideas. Vote to keep the steady hand of Mayor Bass on the wheel of the City's government."
Pratt countered this ad, saying "Mayor Bass was out of the country when thousands of homes--including mine--were burned down. The reservoir that was supposed to hold water to fight fires was allowed to go dry. There was no water pressure to fire hydrants. The City has been too lenient with repeat criminal offenders. Keeping the Mayor's 'steady hand on the wheel' will ensure more future disasters. We need sensible actions to protect the city's residents. I ask voters to elect me so I can take sensible actions that will benefit the working people who pay the taxes needed to support the services we all need."
Raman tried to draw a contrast between Pratt and herself, saying "unlike him, I am not a fascist. If I am elected I will ban residents from having barbecues in their backyards. These people have indoor kitchens they can use. They're not like the homeless who live outdoors and must, of necessity, do their cooking over open fires where they are camped out. Eventually, the homeless will be moved into high-density housing with indoor kitchens that the city will build for them after I'm the mayor."
