Since it’s apportioned by population, how would this not result in the same proportional representation?

More deep staters on the payrolls, not just elected, but staff positions. Growing government.

Yeah! They want to make DC and Puerto Rico States, and give them representation in Congress!

I want to make Puerto Rico independent, and absorb DC into Maryland for purposes of representation!

Smaller states get at least one congressman. More representatives would dilute small state’s influence.

Why stop at 585? Originally, representation was one rep for every 30,000. That would give us about 10,000 or so representatives today.

This country is shot. Nobody will stick to the rules. They just want to do whatever they think might get their sorry asses in the drivers seat so they can lie, cheat, and abuse the actual American citizens.

They are corrupt crooks. Both parties are abusers.

With 150 more reps, that would mean 150 more electoral votes in federal elections, controlled by the states, right? No chance for fraud, right?

So when redrawing ALL district boundaries based on population, would an illegal alien count for the same as a citizen, or only 3/5ths, or not at all? No fraud possible here, either. Right?

"The number of voting representatives in the U.S. House was first set at 435 by the Apportionment Act of 1911 (Public Law 62-5), signed on August 8, 1911, and this number took effect in 1913. It was later permanently capped at 435 by the Permanent Apportionment Act of 1929."

U.S. population in 1929: 1.22 million, or 279,931 people per representative.

U.S. population in 2026: ~350 million, or 804,598 people per representative.

There should be 1,250 representatives. Part of the problem is that over the years, the tax base has increased while the number of representatives has not. So now each of those a**holes have control of far more money and power than they used to. THAT is a big part of the problem.

There are major Constitutional problems with absorbing DC into MD. First the Constitution requires that the District containing the U.S. seat of government not be a part of any state. This was to prevent a potentially hostile state government from taking legal action against government officials doing their jobs. Secondly, there is the twenty-third Amendment granting residents of the District three Electoral votes.

I realize that to many dems, the Constitution is an archaic document that can be ignored at will, but I don’t think the problems of DC statehood can be simply wished away.

As for Puerto Rico, when we took possession of it, islands of its size were considered too small to survive as independent. It’s plenty large enough to stand on its own two feet.

The difference would come in large congressional districts being broken up into smaller chunks better representative of their smaller populations. For instance, not all of the mega urban centers in our country are wholly liberal, contrary to appearance.

Apportionment carried out as the founders intended would also provide the benefit of closer more personal contact with your rep, as intended, due to their smaller slice of the pie. It also has to be coupled with a return of the philosophy of being in your district far far more than in DC. Modern tech can help with that.

The intended ratio was 30,000 to 1. It would be way more than 1,250.
