🚨 Space Pearl Harbor: US_SpaceCom Commander Gen. Whiting warns Russia may put a NUCLEAR weapon in low Earth orbit.

Just one detonation in space could cripple 80% of the global satellite network and plunge the world in chaos.

"That's an outcome we just can't tolerate."

Russia? Again?

*sigh* This is getting old, and so are the people in government still living in the 1980’s. Find a new boogieman.

“ 1st question...Why?”
***********************

Because THEY WOULDN’T. Exploding a nuclear weapon in low earth orbit (LEO) would do as much damage to their LEO satellite systems as it would do to other nations’ LEO systems.

I know that some people think Putin is Satan himself. Worst human ever. Capable of anything. An Agent of Chaos.

I think Putin is the leader of his country, and is trying to expand and enrich his country (not an unusual goal) and is willing to break some rules to achieve his goals. Heck, if someone described Trump that way, it wouldn’t really bother me.

But we have long since left the existential struggle of the Cold War. The Soviet Union fell. The Bolsheviks are not trying to take over the whole world. The crazy times are over.

Why would Russia want to eliminate all the satellites? Look up the Kessler Syndrome. If you make enough debris in orbit, no satellite can survive (too many collisions). You can shut down Space for 100 years or more. Completely. Why would Russia do that? And wouldn’t we nuke the absolute eff out of Russia if they did that?

I think this US General is looking for money and is not citing a serious threat.

How would such a stupid move benefit Russia (or China, or any other nuclear-capable country?

With the exception of Iran or another Muslim country which wants to bring on the 12th Imam Madhi...

” Just one detonation in space could cripple 80% of the global satellite network”

The author thinks their readers are stupid.

The assertion is impossible.

What are the realistic implications of a Russian nuke weapon in low earth orbit indefinitely?
