It is very complex. It is not merely a moral, philosophical, or intellectual matter—it is also a matter of military warfare. That is to say: on the one hand, there are wars that are just. Is it just for Israel to defend itself? Absolutely just. Is it just—after the butchering perpetrated by the Palestinian Hamas guerrillas on October 7, 2023, killing more than a thousand innocent Israelis—for Israel to go and kill Hamas terrorists wherever they may be hiding? It is just; it is a just war. Now, in such just wars—regrettably, tragically—innocent people sometimes die. In wars—no matter how just they may be—innocent people often die.
