Finally Leaving NATO May Be the Unintended American Benefit Resulting From the Iran War
America First Report ^ | JD Rucker

Posted on 04/08/2026 11:12:52 AM PDT by Tench_Coxe

When history books are written about Operation Epic Fury, analysts will spend chapters debating whether it was wise, justified, or legally sound. But one consequence may stand above all others in terms of shaping the next century of American foreign policy: the Iran conflict may have finally given the United States the political and moral clarity to walk away from NATO.

That may not have been the intention. But sometimes the most important outcomes are the unintended ones.

(snip)

The Iran conflict has been enormously clarifying. When the United States launched military operations against Iran — alongside Israel, without consulting European allies — the reaction from NATO partners was swift and revealing. Spain closed its airspace to U.S. bombers departing from the UK and denied American forces use of Rota Naval Station and Morón Air Base for any combat, refueling, or staging missions related to the conflict. France went further: President Emmanuel Macron blocked Israeli aircraft from using French airspace to transport U.S.-made munitions intended for the war effort.

These aren’t the actions of allies. These are the actions of neutral parties — or worse, passive adversaries.

(snip)

Trump and Rubio may not have gone into this conflict intending to blow up NATO. But if the Iran war accelerates an honest reckoning with an alliance that denied America its own bases in its own moment of need, then something genuinely valuable will have come from it — even if unintentionally.

Sometimes the most important exits happen through doors that were forced open, not planned.

The author makes a good point. Some will state its Trump, but I would argue its Europe, primarily through the EU and its affiliated organizations.

The author says Europe is rearming, but I suspect its more to keep EU member nations in line.

One thing I wouldn't do is subsidize a country(s) while it builds up the ability to use that military in a hostile manner against the US (China analogue--I'm old enough to remember videos of streets of people riding bicycles, not driving cars).

European and Indian Ocean Bases For long-range missions and logistics, the U.S. secured the use of various European facilities:

United Kingdom: The U.K. authorized the use of RAF Fairford for B-1 and B-52 heavy bombers and Diego Garcia (British Indian Ocean Territory) for striking Iranian missile sites.

Germany: Ramstein Air Base has been used for directing attack drones and force deployment, while headquarters in Stuttgart provide strategic planning.

Italy: Aviano Air Base hosts refueling aircraft that facilitate long-range bombing missions.

France: The Istres-Le Tubé Air Base has hosted U.S. refueling aircraft.

Cyprus: RAF Akrotiri, while a British base, has hosted U.S. troops and has been targeted during the conflict.

NATO is a relic of the Cold War and is no longer relevant. The fumbling over Ukraine has revealed that in decisive fashion. May as well turn out the lights, the party’s over,

Did the author mention that a decision by the Trump administration to leave NATO would be no more consequential than re-naming the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” or re-naming the Department of Defense as the “Department of War?”

It would be nothing more than an executive action that carries no weight after Trump leaves office.

Leaving NATO isn’t a bad idea. Extricating ourself from being allied with Israel would be an even better idea.

What Trump’s critics don’t understand about him is his ability to foresee political consequences.

Imagine the political effects of trying to rename the Gulf of America, the Department of War or rejoining NATO.

NATO should have been dissolved right after the fall of the Soviet Union. We could maintain military installtions on friendly territory as necessary.

But Trump has to hurry up. Already the Fox News discussion implied it was so cataclysmic to world relations that it probably won’t really happen.

Boooooo.

The Europeans kick sand in our faces at the beach, laugh at us, belittle Trump and then expect to arrogantly go on with their lives. Screw them.

Doesn’t make any sense. Trump has already admitted he needs allies to help reopen the straight, it was Scott Jenning’s number one reason last night for why it’s not currently open - that none of our allies are helping. So to just abandon them, ensuring they might never ever help again, just doesn’t app up.
