Can Russia and China turn the Iran War into a long war Washington can’t win?
The Hill ^ | 03/25/2026 | Charbel A. Antoun

Posted on 03/29/2026 11:38:13 AM PDT by CondoleezzaProtege

Russia has quietly become Iran’s most consequential external partner. Public reporting shows Moscow feeding Tehran real time satellite imagery of U.S. and Israeli positions — a simple but powerful boost to Iranian targeting and battle damage assessment. Russia has also helped upgrade Iran’s Shahed drones with better navigation and communications systems. These aren’t glamorous contributions, but they matter: they force the United States to burn multimillion dollar interceptors on cheap, disposable threats.

None of this changes the balance of power. But it absolutely changes the tempo of the war.

China’s support looks different — quieter, but just as important. Beijing buys the overwhelming majority of Iran’s oil, giving Tehran the revenue it needs to keep functioning despite the pounding its infrastructure has taken. China also provides BeiDou3 navigation signals that improve the accuracy of Iranian missiles and drones.

But China is cautious. It wants stability in global energy markets, not a regional meltdown that sends oil prices into the stratosphere. Beijing will buy Iranian oil and provide navigation support, but it won’t take steps that risk a direct confrontation with Washington. Its priority is protecting its own economic interests, not rescuing Iran from the consequences of the war…

The biggest challenge for Washington isn’t Iran’s capability. It’s the cost of sustaining the campaign.

Destroy their infrastructure. Let them “win” in a land of no electricity, no dams, and no bridges.

Apparently the President doesn’t have the stomach for treating Iran the way Clinton treated Serbia.

It’s a Middle East war. They don’t need 3rd party help to turn into a long war we lose. That’s their default, they usually go long, and we’d usually be better off if we hadn’t gotten into it.

No. If we wanted to, we could keep Iran in the dark ages to match their dark ages pedo worshipping political system.

Of course they can drag it out . . . if Iran has the wherewithal to play along. And you know what they say: turnabout’s fair play.

“””—”Russia and China”—”””

The two enemies we devote our military budget and national defense to, the enemies we are opposing in this European invasion by Russia, the 2 enemies always spreading darkness around the world, from Latin America to the Caribbean, to the Middle East and Africa, and Europe.

Yeah, they are a problem.

The proxy wars in Korea and Vietnam that we fought against China and Russia were never complete victories. Both of those were jungle wars with high U.S. losses. Afghanistan was a complete loss. We still have troops in Europe, Iraq and around the Middle East who have been, and still are targets of terrorists. Would Iran be any different than Afghanistan or Iraq? I doubt it, because there already have been American deaths, and we haven't even entered the country yet.

My brother served in Vietnam in the mid 60's, and I supported him and America. But I was a teenager at the time and knew nothing. Now that I'm old, I'm not for wasteful proxy wars. That's just my personal opinion.

I agree - but there’s that “murderous lunatics building nukes” issue.

So many unproven assumptions.

Assumption 1: Iran can continue to sell meaningfull amounts of oil.

Assumption 2: Iran can continue to control Karg Island.

Assumption 3. The USA will not control Kharg Island, and will not economically benefit from the sale of Iranian oil, as obvious war reparations.

Assumption 4. The theocratic Iran regime will maintain control of the majority of its geographical space and infrastructure.

None of the above assumptions seem likely for more than a few weeks, perhaps a couple of months.

What does this tell you about US midterms?

P/M Netanyahu seeks to avoid an Israeli vote
Because the Iran war gives him no boost in polls
The Straits Times ^ | Mar 25, 2026

A Times of Israel poll on March 19 showed Mr Netanyahu’s Likud party would likely
win a puny 28 of the Knesset seats, down from the present 34, falling short of a majority.

Mr Netanyahu had assured Trump “Mossad said” Iranians would throw out their rulers. Now reversing himself, Netanyahu has acknowledged there was “no certainty” Iranians would overthrow their rulers.

Netanyahu apparently built his winning reelection prospects on winning—— a prospect which now appears remote.

Netanyahu’s only strategy is to “buy time.”

So what is Netanyahu telling Trump now?

We can only hope Mossad does not have “another” brainstorm.

Sorry but no,

USA has developed and has in service directed laser beam weapons that take out drones and robotic boats

“My brother served in Vietnam in the mid 60’s, and I supported him and America.”

But McNamara and LBJ didn’t.

The lack of willingness to destroy North Vietnam’s government, its capital, its harbor, and every other asset that it had doomed the effort from the start and wasted the lives of Americans sent into the fight.

Trump isn’t doing anything remotely like Vietnam. Or like Iraq and Afghanistan. He’s fighting with the intention of eliminating Iran’s Islamist regime and its IRGC.

This isn’t nation building and won’t include an army of occupation. The pearl clutchers and prophets of disaster won’t get the payoff that they are hoping for.

Clinton hated the Serbian people.

President Trump does not hate the Iranian people. He hates the ruling theocracy. Indeed, he wants the Iranian people to rise up and rid themselves of the Mullahs and when this happens, with his assistance, he would prefer something of a functioning country with functioning infrastructure to remain standing.

This complicates the matter.

No, and I don’t think Russia and China are trying to drag this out. It is the anti-Trump press is trying to turn this into a long war.
