Canada will soon mark a grim milestone: 100,000 deaths via the country’s assisted suicide or Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) program. The program is due to “celebrate” its tenth anniversary on 17 June, having claimed the lives of more than twice the number of Canadians who died in World War II (42,042).
The latest figures show 15,767 Canadians were killed by the government in 2024, or more than 5% of deaths that year.
That works out at 45 Canadians a day.
The figure has increase significantly year on year. In 2021, 9,842 Canadians were killed by the government.
As The New York Post notes, around 2,000 animals in shelters are killed each year.
There has been growing outcry in recent weeks and months after it was revealed that Canadians can now seek “same-day euthanasia:” a referral to the program and approval within 24 hours.
One recent case, involving a 26-year-old man with seasonal depression, caused shock and outrage when it was widely reported. 26-year-old Kiano Vafaeian, who had Type 1 diabetes, suffered seasonal depression and had vision problems, was approved for suicide and killed on 30 December last year, in British Columbia.
“We never thought there would be a chance that any doctor would approve a 22- or 23-year-old at that time for MAID because of diabetes or blindness,” mother Margarat Marsilla, of Ontario, told Fox News Digital.
New York became the latest American state to legalize euthanasia. A bill passed the state legislature by a slim margin in June last year.

Someone here recently posted an article about an elderly Canadian woman who signed up for an assisted suicide, then changed her mind. They killed her anyway.
