For the same money already spent Elon could build his hyper loop tube train it runs in a vacuum tube at supersonic speeds because there is zero air drag or sonicboom. Maglev so it doesn’t even touch the walls.it hovers in the middle. The UAE are building one that is the subsonic version but still in a tube at 500+ mph.
Elon can also bore 12 foot diameter tunnels for 27 million published coat their goal is 5 millon per mile with continuous TBM and slipcrete lining behind it. Remember a subway tunnel in NYC cost over a billion per mile and in the EU they are 250-500 million Euro per KM so he is destroying the cost of boring. The deep tubes of the London Underground are smaller in diameter by almost a quarter meter. So you can run a full metro line in a 12ft wide tunnel as is, Glasgow also has smaller bore 11.3 meter deep metros as well.
