Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday that plans floated by Moldova's president to hold a referendum on reunification with Romania would be destructive to Moldovan statehood.
President Maia Sandu said last week she would vote in favour of unification with neighbouring Romania if a referendum were to take place, to help protect Moldova's fragile democracy against Russian pressure. Romania is an EU and NATO member.
Sandu has repeatedly accused Russia of meddling in Moldova, a former Soviet republic of around 2.4 million with a Romanian-speaking majority and a Russian-speaking minority

He looks like he’s sitting on a cactus…
It’s none of Russia’s business, but unification of a former Soviet republic with Romania would represent another drop in status and influence, which was Putin’s real reason for invading Ukraine. But that brutal pig has little remaining of his war-ravaged military to do much of anything, short of making nuclear threats.
Putin is screwing up royally.
“Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday that plans floated by Moldova’s president to hold a referendum on reunification with Romania would be destructive to Moldovan statehood.”
My grandfather was from Romania. My grandmother was from Moldava.
I am wondering, why they did not merged long time ago?
Moldova was always part of Romania, until Tzars in 1812 and then after reunification, Stalin during WWII, grab them.
They speak the same Romanian language, share the same culture and history, and they border each other.
While Romania is doing pretty well recently, Moldova is economical backwater, probably the poorest country in Europe.
So obviously, the merger would benefit Moldovans a lot.
The only problem is that Moldova got some Russian settlers from Stalin era, who do NOT want to be part of Romania.
And Lavrov is standing by them.
Russia, as they are trying to recreate the old Russian empire, has actually plans to reannex Moldova.
Around 1,500 Russian soldiers, stationed in Moldova's breakaway Transnistria region, which Russia pledged at the 1999 OSCE summit to withdraw, but failed to do so.
Istanbul Summit 1999
Russia committed to specific, binding deadlines for withdrawing military equipment and personnel from Moldova and Georgia.

Srednik says, “Well, DUHH!”
Romania prior to WWII had three regions: Walachia (SE), Transylvania (W) and Moldova (NE). The Soviet Union — the only nation to expand borders after the war (stealing land from Romania, Germany, Poland, Japan, the Baltics and wherever else the Red Army occupied).
Bismarck said of preventive wars, “The nation that fights a preventive war is like a man who kills himself because he is afraid to die.”
While the current war is a bald Neo-Soviet land grab, Vladolf Putler has couched it in the context of preventing NATO expanding to Russia’s doorstep.
In doing so this evil troll has brought about death, destruction, and ruin to his country. All he has left is threats of nuclear war.
Let us hope the Russian army can defeat the CheKha oops, the NKVD, oops, the KGB, oops, the FSB and SVR and save “rump” Russia before it is too late.
That is VERY unsavory business. I'm just glad my country doesn't meddle in the affairs of other countries.
There is a difference between Russia/Red China/North Korea/Iran/Cuba/Nicaragua/Venezuela meddling in a country and America meddling.
Sounds like Hitler’s warning to Austria, if they went ahead with their referendum.
Yes, I know.
All of their leaders are “the next Hitler” and all of ours are “the next Churchill”.
Got it.
LOL, you sure have it bad alright.
I’m just a student of history and I recognize the incredible coincidence that every war has been won by the “good guys”.
We are extremely lucky. I hope that streak continues.
That didn’t make sense and sure didn’t reflect accurate history, but it does fit your embracing of those countries I listed.
I like the governments of those countries significantly less than I like the government of my country. However, both measures are incredibly low.
I love my countrymen significantly more than the citizens of those countries. Both measures are pretty high.

Isn’t that what Hitler also said about the Sudeten Germans in 1938?
Of course, though, Hitler wanted all of Czechoslovakia, period, and gaining the Sudetenland was just the first step.
In actuality, Putin’s claims on Transnistria, more closely echo Hitler’s view of the Sudentenland.
It’s sad to think this can of worms is about to be opened up again.
You sure clammed up the last time I mentioned the stolen lands Ukraine is sitting on: Trans-Carpathia, Northern Bukovina, Lwów Voivodeship. The Ukraine is not an innocent victim.
Because your argument is moronic, Ukraine is not currently stealing land from other countries like Russia with invasion and annexation.
Every country signed the UN Charter agreeing to settle ALL border disputes by negotiation.
The United Nations Charter, specifically Chapter VI (Articles 33-38), mandates that all international disputes, including border disagreements, must be settled through peaceful means, such as negotiation, mediation, arbitration, or judicial settlement .
Ha ha. Keeping stolen property means they’re thieves too. You cite the law to protect your loot. Your filthy UN charter proves those lands should be returned as they were taken from the original owners by force. Ukraine should do the right thing and give them back.
“Ukraine is not currently stealing land from other countries like Russia with invasion and annexation.”
So that excuses them? Because the land was stolen a long time ago. “I stole your property but it’s okay because someone else is doing it to me.” My little kids tried stupid arguments like that when they got in trouble.
