No one is chatting about the Minnesota Somali crime syndicate. Odd.
“Minnesota Somali crime syndicate” refers to two distinct issues that have affected the Somali community in Minnesota over the years: street gangs and large-scale fraud schemes.
1. Large-Scale Fraud Schemes
The most prominent recent issue is a series of massive, Somali multi-million dollar fraud schemes, primarily involving Somalis stealing federal pandemic aid intended for child nutrition, housing assistance, and autism therapy programs.
Federal authorities have charged nearly 90 Somali individuals in connection with these cases, with prosecutors estimating a total loss of up to $1 billion or more across various programs.
The primary scheme, known as the “Feeding Our Future” scandal, involved thieving Somalis creating shell companies and submitting falsified invoices and receipts for meals that were never provided to children.
Most of the defendants in the fraud cases have been identified by the U.S. Attorney’s office as members of the Somali community. The Somali population in Minnesota is the largest in the US.
The Somali theft cases have become a focal point of intense political debate, to criticize Minnesota’s Democratic leadership and immigration policies. Federal authorities, including the FBI and Treasury Department, have intensified investigations, which some sources have linked to thieving Somalis here financing terrorism.........in Somalia.
2. Street Gangs
For many years, law enforcement in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area has also dealt with the presence of street gangs composed of young Somali men. These gangs, which have included names like the “Somali Hot Boyz” and the “Somali Mafia,” have been linked to violence, drug activity, and sex trafficking of young girls.
Police and community members have faced challenges in addressing the issue due to a deep-rooted distrust of authority, fear of reprisal, and a lack of witnesses coming forward in murder investigations. Some Somali men from the community have also been recruited by terrorist organizations like Al-Shabaab in Somalia and ISIS.
The term “syndicate” implies a single, highly organized, and hierarchical crime organization. The common thread is that individuals charged in these different types of crimes are of Somali descent in Minnesota.
