Regrets, he has a few. John Cena recalled to Joe Rogan on Friday how he upset Communist China in 2021 by referring to Taiwan as a country only to roil America with his groveling Mandarin-language apology.
The backdown came as the former WWE star and actor confessed on the Joe Rogan Experience it was a difficult learning experience with plenty of Americans then – and now – wondering just what he was aiming at by kowtowing to the Communist dictatorship in Beijing, as Breitbart News reported.
Cena had apologized to China for calling Taiwan a country while promoting his film F9.
Cena recounted the hard lesson to the podcaster, saying, “Just because you know the language doesn’t mean you know the culture,” further underscoring the move as American franchises increasingly cater to international audiences like China.
Fox News notes Cena said he spoke in an effort to spread pro-wrestling to foreign countries as he recalled doing prompter reads in Mandarin.
“You do a million of these things, and one of them said like, ‘Hey, Taiwan, see this,’ and it was all in Mandarin and the Pinyin [Chinese phonetic language using Latin alphabet] described Taiwan as a country. So ‘be the first country to see this.’ Now, over there, they look through a different lens, like geopolitics are murky waters, man.
“It was like a Ron Burgundy moment,” Cena said, referring to a famous gag from the comedy “Anchorman” in which Will Ferrell’s character mindlessly reads offensive rhetoric from the teleprompter.

Pathetic groveling apology to the Chinese Communist Party
That was 14 full years ago. He is still bending the battered knee to Red China? I recall when he did it. He appeared to be speaking Mandarin very easily, and many in the States thought he was pandering to the Chinese.
He must have the potential for earning a boatload of cash in the foreseeable future, to still be bringing this up. Commies tend to have long memories for any show of opposition or possible defiance.
The red Chinese market is less important now so there really isn’t much reason to kiss their ass. Just as well movies got even worse when they were aiming for their market (though it was less gay than usual)
Even in the 80s, Hollywood was kissing China’s ass.
Even in the movie “Red Dawn”, China was made out to be the good guys.
That image is the wage of siding with tyranny for the love of money. Brutal and on target.
I don’t doubt he feels some regret there, that is just a big hole to dig out of. Many people will never forgive him. I didn’t know much about him, was not a fan. But I knew who he was, and it repulsed me.
For him, the rest of his life (should he really repent of his actions) will be much like the “Rime of The Ancient Mariner” who is bound to wear the rotting carcass of the dead albatross around his neck and retell his tale, over and over to complete strangers.
That is, if he really repents and feels the shame of it.
He may end up deciding just repressing his shame and throwing his lot in with the Communists is his best approach, and that will be that. It is the lazy way for him to handle it.

It wasn’t *just* pissing people off. He is supposed to be an action star and that made him look like a little bi&@h. Hard to take a tough guy character seriously when all you picture is a good doggie licking Xi’s toes.

Cena needs to go over there and star in Chinese films. There are a lot more chinese than Americans, so he has a bigger base. He should also take all of his crap with him. We don’t need his a*s in this country anymore.
I agree. He should just buy a house in Bejing. They have plenty of films there he can satisfy them with. Just go away from here. He reminds me of some young high school tart that screws every football player on the team. Then 10 years later is a fat pig with 5 ‘oops’ children running around, getting government subsidies. Go Cena. Go Chinese. They luv ‘ya.
