Samsung is rolling out a new software update to owners of its Family Hub refrigerators. This will bring cool features like an upgrade to Bixby and smarter food tracking with AI, but it comes with curated advertisements on the cover screen.
The biggest part of this update is a major upgrade to the AI Vision Inside technology in compatible refrigerators. This feature is meant to help you reduce food waste and save money, which is something I can always get behind. The AI Vision Inside can now recognize 37 fresh food items, like apples, kiwis, and cucumbers, which is a big jump.
(snip)
So this isn't something forced on you after you buy your expensive fridge, but this may be because you were not informed of ads when buying fridges before today. However, I would keep an eye on the terms and conditions you agree to in the future, just in case the option to turn ads off is ever removed.
Another part of the update is an upgrade to Bixby. The voice assistant now has Voice ID capabilities, meaning it can recognize who is speaking and automatically switch to their specific Samsung account. This is super convenient, letting you easily access your personal calendar and photos, or even use the Find My Phone feature to locate a misplaced device, even if it's on silent.

My LG Diswasher is spying on me..................
LG is Samsung’s sister company................
I buy low tech.
I don’t have these issues.
GTFO
LG and Samsung are competitors.
You are right, I was thinking Hyundai and KIA..........They all look alike to me..................
Cool?
Realy?
It's spelled "obnoxious, annoying, intrusive, and unnecessary" but it's pronounced "cool".
If you want it, have at it. I want my refrigerator to refrigerate. The End.
Interesting. Thanks for posting. Brave New Fridge. What about ICE. AOC worried.
They do make some very pretty fridges lately, but no thanks. Appliances (like cars, phones, computers) with brains are bearing spyware, and one day could be up to something even worse.
I wonder if the fridge can recognize bullshit. I know I can.
Does it tell you what that hunk of mystery green stuff is in the back of the drawer?
I almost bought a dishwasher where you had to register and subscribe to get all the wash cycles other than basic.
Dear Lord. I can see it now. Refrigerator says I have a large cake inside. It will quit working unless I get rid of the cake.
Our fridge is Jenn Aire. Hate it! It’s not as smart as some, but all digital.
All I want is an effing fridge with a dial that has an arrow with “colder” or “warmer”. I DON’T NEED A DIGITAL MENU!
Yes, they appear competitors, but they are really not. Many store brand foods are made by name brands. They appear to be competitors, but they aren’t really.
This kind of garbage reminds me that I need to disable the OS connectivity in my truck. What a useless, invasive world!
BIXBY: Don’t you think you’ve had enough beer?
ME: F’ Off, Bixby!
I love this stuff.
I cannot think of a single reason why I’d want to talk to my refrigerator.
As for the freshness thing, I handle that with a marker. I put the date the package. Problem solved.
“...Family Hub devices are not collecting personal information or tracking consumers...”
Not yet.
Great.
Another means for the government to spy on us and control us.
Big Brother can’t come close to what we’re living today.
