On October 15, 2025, the Trump administration held an FBI news briefing, which started at about 3 pm Eastern Time. At about 21 minutes and 43 seconds into the briefing, President Donald Trump was asked about national concealed carry reciprocity. Here is a transcript from x.com:
Reporter: Will there be a further conversation to have national concealed carry applied to our actual D.C. like if you had a drivers license for Texas and you had a permit, of course you could drive…
President Trump: “Well as you know, they have been talking about that for a long time. Its an interesting question. A lot of people feel strongly both ways. We are talking about that.” President Donald Trump has previously said he would sign a national reciprocity bill if it were to reach his desk. The second term for President Trump has been the most active administration in restoring Second Amendment rights of any president in history.
There have been significant differences in bills that have been submitted to enact national carry reciprocity. The framework that appears most favored would preempt most states’ restrictions on the carry of firearms by non-residents. Here is an example of H.R. 38, as introduced in the House of Representatives in 2025:
This bill establishes a federal statutory framework to regulate the carry or possession of concealed firearms across state lines.
Specifically, an individual who is eligible to carry a concealed firearm in one state may carry or possess a concealed handgun (other than a machine gun or destructive device) in another state that allows its residents to carry concealed firearms.

Long overdue, and a critical 2A issue.
The BOR applies to all Americans, and should be interpreted in that light.
There is no valid excuse for varying criteria from one state to another, and it’s usually some minor technicality, which politicians couldn’t agree on.
The permitting process needs to be nationwide, if at all.
Interesting my a$$. It is a God given, inalienable, and natural right for a person to be able to protect themselves.
Are we to believe we do not have the right to protect ourselves? Who do these blowhards believe they are?
Marriage isn’t in the Constitution, but when MA legalized same sex marriage, the whole country just had to go along with the whole thing — because it would be CRAZY to have different laws in different states.
Right to bear arms IS in the Constitution and it shall not be infringed. But, what the heck, we’ll just let every state and municipality approach it in their own individual way and infringe the right in a million different ways. Because why not?

My permit covers Pennsylvania. The other day I had need to travel a couple miles into New York State for the weekend spent on a friend’s farm. Even though I stopped and locked p my firearm, it was still technically illegal. What a pain.

In my mind, this goes with the Bill of Rights basics...concealed, not concealed...pertains to every person in every state.
I’d like to see nationwide Constitutional carry, but I really, really don’t want a federal carry permit system.
It would be done similar to driver’s licenses.
I am under the assumption the Feds don’t keep a database, and the states allow their enforcement arms access to each other databases.
There has to be someone here who knows the actual truth though.

Instead of permits, the Trump administration needs to haul unconstitutional states into court for violating inalienable rights.
Throw arresting officers and prosecutors in a Federal pen for Constitutional rights violations and the obscene laws will come off the books.

The fact that states don’t allow reciprocity is a violation of the 2A
I don't know if its a violation of the 2A, but it is a major PIA. When I travel to California, I cannot carry, except "while I am in my domicile", which includes campsites, homes, and RV's (parked of course).
Will it change? Not in the immediate future I am afraid. Too many bigwigs in those blue states, who will of course support the narrative the "guns are bad and guns kill people" ad nauseum etc etc...
But we can hope, yes?
Yes, we can hope.
There is the rub. Places where you most need to be armed such as New York and DC largely don't "allow" their residents to carry.
And the very idea that governments claim the right to "allow" their residents to exorcise a Constitutional right is repugnant.
