As reported in Florida Today.com, the Brevard County commissioners have amended their employee policy to allow county employees to openly carry firearms while at work. The change is consistent with the appeals court ruling that the Florida ban on open carry is unconstitutional under the Second Amendment.

On October 16, 2025, from floridatoday.com :

The next time you see a county employee, they could very well have a pistol on their hip.

And they would not be violating any county policy.

Brevard County commissioners this week amended their employee policy around firearms to reflect an appeals court ruling in McDaniels vs. State of Florida allowing open carry in Florida starting in September.

The Brevard County commissioners had a meeting on October 14, 2025. It is likely that the change in employee conditions was made at that meeting.

Brevard County has a population of over 600,000. It is a long, thin county along the east coast of Florida, and it contains the famous NASA space launch facility. It is informally known as the Space Coast. Brevard County commissioners have long been supportive of restoring the rights protected by the Second Amendment. Five years ago, on August 6, 2020, Brevard County Commissioners passed a resolution supporting open carry in Florida. From mynews13.com:

Gun laws are once again a topic ahead of the elections, with Brevard County approving a resolution in hopes to change concealed weapons laws.

The resolution aims to support the expansion of “lawful statewide open carry of firearms.” As District 2 Commissioner Bryan Lober explained, the outline of a gun is enough to alarm someone, so he wants guns out in the open.

On April 24, 2018, it was reported that the Brevard County commissioners had unanimously changed County policy to allow County employees

Great! Let’s see ment more positive steps forward like this.
Open and concealed carry both are our constitutionally- revignized rights as American citizens. End state infringements, denials of our liberties TOO!

I live in Pennsylvania where open carry has always existed, yet in over 70 years of life I have only seen holsters on someone’s hip a hand full of times. Most people who want to carry will get a concealed carry permit. The open carry guys are typically trying to make a statement, not protect themselves.

Agreed, although I open carrying when I have to get a lot of cash out of the bank every couple of weeks. I make a point of clipping my holster and chambering a round before I get into my car, since getting cash out is a required regular routine for me and could make me a target.

Sometimes, and it is a good statement. Actually, it is several statements. One, we the people are armed so go attack someone else. Second, guns are not the problem, criminals are the problem.

You might want to rethink that. If some punk wants to take your cash, doing open carry only for warns him that you're carrying. He liable to put a round in your head from behind. With concealed carry, he will not assume you are armed giving you a chance to defend yourself.

My understanding is that open carry laws were pushed in order to give a concealed carriers legal protection if someone claimed they saw their gun.

Of course in Texas, open carry is for barbecues - when you're wearing your barbecue hat, barbecue boots, and carrying you're barbecue pistol in your barbecue belt and holster.

I believe you're looked down on if you have too much un-engraved metal on your pistol, and too much blank, smooth leather on your holster and boots.

Due to the many engineers and technicians employed in the launch business, the GOP in Brevard County has long had a libertarian, populist conservative vibe, along with a laid back, surfer element that the business community caters to. The US gun maker Kel-Tec is also based there.

I've had a CCP since the 70's and I have only opened carried a very few times in over 50+ years.

I carry for protection, not show... except when show is called for.

Very rare.
