It's a matter of logic.
If you're not pro-life if you oppose abortion but support the death penalty, then you're not pro-life if you oppose the death penalty but support abortion.
But it's not clear that Pope Leo embraces that logic. And no one on the panel on today's CNN This Morning did
Substitute host Erica Hill kicked off the conversation by playing a clip of Pope Leo expressing support for Dem Sen. Dick Durbin. He was scheduled to receive a "Lifetime Achievement" award for his pro-immigrant stance. Some bishops opposed the award given Durbin's staunch support of abortion.
In the clip, Pope Leo said:
"Someone who says I'm against abortion but says I'm in favor of the death penalty is not really pro-life."
Interestingly, Pope Leo didn't make the converse argument: that someone who opposes the death penalty but supports abortion is not pro-life.

Darkness cannot abide light.
We’re all deserving of hell and its only through Christ that we’re saved. As a Catholic, abortion is especially heinous to me as it targets the most vulnerable and innocent in society. If you’ll kill a baby, its not a great leap to kill the terminal, elderly, handicapped and mentally ill under the guise the state knows best.
Sorry, all recent Popes seem to always bring death penalty yo balance out, suggesting pro-lifers are hypocrites. How about religious leader who only talks about hospitality to foreigners but never talks about the rights of state to govern their borders, even though both are in their teachings?
Oh yeah, that’s also hypocrites but since those foreigners bring money through charities and offerings, they only focus on the importance of hospitality and mute on laws!
I believe the terms “pro life” and “anti-abortion” are wrong.
I wouldn’t use the term “pro life” because I believe some people just need killing.
I wouldn’t use the term “anti-abortion” because I’m “anti- abortion on demand” since some (few) abortions may be medically necessary and the medical term for a miscarriage is “spontaneous abortion” and the latter are (mostly) natural happenings.
I guess the Pope wouldn’t consider God to be pro life either since he condemns those who wont follow him to death, and keeps the sinners from illegally entering Heaven.
The death penalty is pro-life. Its an affirmation that peoples lives are aorth defending and protecting, especially from those who have robbed people, and their family, and society, of their life.
The dezth penalty is a protective societal measure.
Leo is leading the Church straight to hell. Limpdick Durbin is one of the dumbest leaders in the Senate. His claim to fame is legislation forcing children to buy a license to open a lemonade stand. Leo wants to change Christ’s teachings to fit dumb politicians interpretation of faith and morals. Kiss the Church established by Christ goodbye.
