The problem was the liability lawyers and insurance requirement. As a result all non supervised fields shut down. Look in the mirror. The problem was each of us that allowed the legal establishment to rule our lives. We elected lawyers to the legislature and local offices and they worked in their interests. Suprise.
PLAYER: "Why are you throwing me out of the game?"
UMPIRE: "You know what you did!"
PLAYER: "No, I don't!"
UMPIRE: "Well if you don't know, I'm not going to tell you!"
They’ll probably raise prices for the scout seats (behind home plate).
You think that’s bad, just wait till they are allowed to drive!
A terrible call on the very first pitch is certainly newsworthy.
But yes I would be curious to see how her remaining calls went.
I agree. First came astroturf, then the designated hitter, then the merger of the two leagues into a single organization, regular season inter-league play, doing away with the intentional walk, and now (I think) speeding up the game via a clock where baseball was the only major sport that had no clock (games were far too long, however).
Baseball is such a part of this country, crossing every geographic, demographic, and ideological line. This is heart breaking.
It’s telling though that the Savannah Bananas sell out every game they play, even in the big-league ballparks they play.
It’s all about the fans, and they get that.
Good riddance to bad rubbish.
The gender bender bullcrap is so destructive. Why do men have to have every masculine space invaded by women? It’s exactly like Bill Burr said, they don’t want their own things. They want to ruin ours.
But that was a bad call.
Next up female players....
Why can’t they let the guys have their own spaces?
I am not going to bash a brand new rookie ref with the jitters on their first day. Let. me know how she does after her first full year.
I can’t think of any reason a woman can’t be a baseball umpire. Women shouldn’t be army soldiers or fire fighters, but I don’t see any problem with umpire.
Now, should they be NFL umpires? Probably not. You need to run fast enough to keep up with the play and many women can’t. But baseball umpire standing behind home plate calling balls and strikes? You don’t even have to be tall to see over the catcher.
How long will we even have human umpires calling balls and strikes? AI will be doing it before long and every venue will have the exact same strike zone.
Funny you should mention that. I had grown up going to many MLB games as a kid (a frequent-favorite activity of our church youth group.) In 1994, just a few years after graduating high school, I saw a bunch of rich guys complaining about not getting paid enough for playing a game . At that moment, I decided that they never needed another penny from me.
Every once in a while, I feel the slight urge to take the family to a game. It seems like a fun distraction for a few hours. But, then, I remember 1994 and the urge passes ;-)
Very sensitive of you. Put on a dress and swish around for us. I guess men and women should also run around wearing the same jump suit clothes like on Star Trek.
Are we sure she’s not Angel Hernandez with a wig?
That’ll be horrible to have AI and computers running the game. Let’s let big tech make everything as soulless as possible.
You just can’t argue the point. Sad, but not unexpected.
Tell us SPECIFICALLY why she is not cut out for the job.
And why would you want to see a male put on a dress. Dude - get some help - seriously.
I would rather watch Banana Ball.
The ABS (Automatic Balls-Strikes System) is coming. In was tested during Spring Training at selected parks.
There’s a way to stop that - umpires getting to be more consistent in their calls of balls/strikes.
