Despite cheap drones devastating tanks in recent conflicts, the U.S. Army is developing the next-generation AbramsX. This move isn’t a return to old ways but a necessary evolution for modern warfare. The lighter, hybrid-electric AbramsX is designed as a networked “combat node,” integrating AI, advanced sensors, and an Active Protection System to survive on a drone-saturated battlefield. While drones have changed warfare, they cannot hold ground.

Well, that's disappointing.
I guess we need to replace the 27 out of 31 lost to the Russians in Ukraine

“A bad idea? Waste of money. Seems so, at least to me.”
OBVIOUSLY - hybrid-electric, really smart. I used to joke about our next generation of tanks needing charging stations, so it looks like I was close. Figures with BIDEN’S WOMEN designing them.
But look at the bright side, when our tanks hit the brakes (assuming they have brakes), they can recharge their batteries for a whole 5 seconds while they come to stop (regenerative braking).
What’s next from the Neocons, EV bombers?
“I guess we need to replace the 27 out of 31 lost to the Russians in Ukraine”
IDIOT Ukrainians, the tanks were never meant to get close close to the front lines, not with the Russians on the other side.
Hybrid-Electric main battle tank????
Maybe the Army can get Toyota to build it. They do hybrids. Until Mr. Fusion goes mainstream, some type of “fuel” will be needed. Speed and agility will be key.
An American battle tank with anti-drone technology? We’ve come a long way since Desert Storm, and rightly so.
Wretched idea to have an electric tank. I bet the Chinese came up with this one.
Learned from Donald Rumsfeld’s professional autobiography that HE overruled Army brass bolstered by retired general “golden parachutists” when he insisted the M-1 Abrams would be the Army’s new tank “back in the day.” Just like the Army almost cancelled the Patriot missile system, it is a good thing wiser heads prevailed.
Note: A locomotive is a hybrid.
Going to need to strip off a lot of armor to make it lighter, especially when you add in the weight of a big, highly flammable lithium battery. Maybe they can make it out of lightweight aluminum and composites. But with enough armor to stop a Daisy fired BB?
NATO was running the war
Not the Ukrainians
Remind us how far back from the front the tanks can stay and still be effective, and how well they operate in Ukrainian mud
Back in the 80s I worked at a well known manufacturing company that produced the main fuel controls for the turbine engine in the Abrams A1.....that “multi fuel” engine was designed to run on a primary fuel source but in the case of the tank being out of fuel on the battlefield it could also run on just about anything combustible....jet fuel (like JP-8), diesel, gasoline, and even kerosene. While it’s designed to run on jet fuel, it can be adapted to use other fuel types if necessary.

That technology is better than a hybrid electric IMO.
Change isn’t worth doing unless its an improvement.
It needs a new tank, but not the A10 used to ultimately protect the tank? And it better have that hard shell finish to withstand drone attacks. A drone with a can of thermite will make a new vent hole in the hatch of that tank for a few thousand dollars.
And most modern ships and yachts.
Diesel electric….gas turbine electric…steam turbine electric….etc
“NATO was running the war Not the Ukrainians”
I was TRYING to help the Zeepers in explaining away the failure of yet another modern Western Wonder-Weapon (built by their grandparents, by the way).
“...hybrid-electric...”
Aren’t most drones All-Electric?
How will these new tanks be able to compete?
I am waiting to see the new movie “Der Tiger” coming out in September. A German version of “Fury”. This should illustrate why you need tanks that can take a beating and keep on ticking.
Reports that the M1 has not done well in Ukraine vs the Bradley which has done very well raise a lot of questions about why that has happened. But it is not just tanks venerable to drones but any vehicle, person, parked aircraft, building, In other words, drones can attack anything. But rest assured that as sure as drones rule the skies at the moment, something will come along to even the score with them.
