How Ukraine’s Defense at Hostomel Airport Crushed Russia’s Blitzkrieg Plan
United24 ^ | Feb 24, 2025 | Ivan Khomenko

When Russia invaded Ukraine, its primary objective was not just territorial expansion—it was the outright elimination of Ukraine’s independent government. Russian leader Vladimir Putin even claimed that the bloodshed caused by Russia’s invasion is “fully and wholly” the responsibility of “the ruling Ukrainian regime” in his address on February 24, 2022.

As Ukraine’s political and military heart, Kyiv was the ultimate target. Historically, the fall of a nation’s capital has often signaled the collapse of its government and the end of organized defense. Russia’s plan closely mirrored the Blitzkrieg tactics of Nazi Germany in 1940, when swift mechanized assaults and airborne operations overwhelmed France in just weeks.

The Kremlin sought to replicate this rapid strike: overthrow Kyiv’s leadership, install a pro-Russian administration, and force Ukraine into submission before any resistance could take shape.

This made Hostomel Airport the single most critical target in the opening hours of the war. Located just 25 kilometers from Kyiv, it was one of the few airfields in Ukraine capable of handling large military transport aircraft. By securing it, Moscow planned to flood the area with paratroopers, armored vehicles, and reinforcements flown in from Russia and Belarus.

This airborne invasion would have bypassed Ukraine’s ground defenses, allowing Russian forces to launch a direct assault on the capital—potentially ending the war in days, rather than months or years.

But Ukrainian forces disrupted Russia’s plans and prevented a swift takeover. How did they do it?

Intelligence and diplomacy

In mid-January 2022, CIA Director William Burns made a clandestine visit to Kyiv to personally brief Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on U.S. intelligence assessments of Russia’s imminent invasion. The briefing revealed that Moscow’s military strategy hinged on a rapid assault on Kyiv, with Hostomel Airport as a critical target.

Of course, it's time for more Ukrainian state run propaganda - this time from 'United24' per your post.

United24 (Ukrainian: Єдині24, romanized: Yedyni24) is a Ukrainian government-run platform launched on 5 May 2022 to raise money for Ukraine in the Russo-Ukrainian War. On 3 May 2022, Prime Minister of Ukraine … Wikipedia

Personally, I don't believe Freepers need State Run Ukrainian Media to rewrite history for us.

NATO wants Russia as a vassal. NATO used Ukraine as a 'stalking horse' in their proxy war. Putin didn't want to take over the world or attack the government - he wanted someone to do something about the US biowarfare labs, some of which are upwind on his border, he asked the UN to invstigate and said the biowarfare labs were exposing Ukrainian citizens to pathogens without their permission (hey, free experimental test subjects!), he wanted the Ukraine to stop choking off water supply to Crimea, Putin wanted Ukraine to stop serving NATO's plans at getting missiles on Russia's border pointed at Moscow. Putin tried repeatedly and then when the coup happened in Ukraine (State Department and CIA overthrew Ukraine government in 2014), Putin annexed a buffer region in Ukraine along Russia's borders.

This has been a slow motion car crash with Ukraine playing victim and NATO expending Ukrainian lives like they are houseflies. The whole world is well aware that Putin won't allow NATO on his doorstep anymore than the US would allow China on our border in San Diego. But, NATO and Ukraine act like Ukraine is going to get article 5 'protection' and NATO's boots on the ground and Putin said 'nyet'.

The Ukrainian propaganda mill alternates between claiming Russia is a threat to the world and wants to take it over and claining that Russians are too drunk to function and mindlessly walk into machine gun fire in meet waves. Embarrassing for Ukraine: they claim Russians are mindless, stupid, weak drunks and yet, Russia is winning the war.

And you posted Ukrainian state run propaganda. Of course.

Russia is winning the war? After 3 years against a much smaller country....they’ve used up much of their modern ground and air weaponry, employ mercenaries from who-knows-where, kill so many of their young men that they are facing a demographic disaster.......I don’t thing there are any winners in this war, no matter who occupies Ukraine.

What a lazy knee jerk response.

As an American, I'm angry Zelensky-the-grifter was 'gifted' more money in the first 2 years than funds given to any other country in our history, including many more years of war in Afghanistan. Then another year passed with Ukraine soaking up more taxpayer funds WHILE TRYING TO GET WWIII STARTED SO THE US WILL HAVE TO GET INVOLVED.

Zelensky received, by the last time I looked, $189 BILLION dollars when Americans in Ohio, North Carolina, Hawaii, Southern California were ignored in times of crisis. No, the fall of Ukraine does not impact the Unite States other than making it harder for the Dems to operate Election theft, graft, money laundering out of Kyiv.

Yes, I resent grifters who try to get the US to fight their wars for them. I value American soldiers' lives too much to remain passive while Zelensky travels around Europe, talking about his 'victory plan' which involves US BOOTS ON THE GROUND.

NATO promises more than it can deliver to Ukraine, but will only make those empty promises if the US provides 'guarantees' (code for boots on the ground).

NATO/Zelensky tried a never ending series of tactics to get the US into direct war with Russia, because that's the only way NATO could 'win' (expend Ukrainians and AMericans like ammunition). It was calculated from the start, and if Kamala was stolen into office in 2024, NATO would have the war and Americans to fight it for them.

Even the US admits there are US biolabs in Ukraine. Gee, wonder why the US locates its biolabs in Ukraine, eh? Biden family owns one of those labs. What a coincidence.

Ukraine is aligned with enemies of the US. This was profitable for NATO/Ukraine when Biden was president. But Zelensky wouldn't investigate Hunter Biden's Burisma or any of the dirty dealings of Pelosi's son, Biden's son and brother, Romney's relative, Schumer's son. The Dem Deep State machine operates out of Ukraine with Zelensky's protection.

But you have nothing of value to say, so you basically grunt 'Russian propaganda' and call it a night.

The US has other conflicts with Russia on other topics. From my point of view, the Ukraine is Deep State Headquarters and keeps trying to draw us into the war, after extracting almost $200 billion and claiming he 'needs $120 Billion more, and more weapons and more of everything. Zelensky let President Trump twist in the wind instead of simply investigating rampant Dem crime. I think Zelensky wanted Trump to be removed from office so the money would flow again. Why should I care about Zelensky? I care the public is being abused, but giving Zelensky-the-grifter sadly doesn't benefit the public.

While the US khas serious conflicts with Russia, they haven't extracted $200 Billion and made us their Daddy, or tried to lure us into WWIII.

Russia is not fighting a 'much smaller country'; Russia is fighting all of NATO. The US alone gave Ukraine $200 Billion in support. Russia is not losing, and it is addressing issues like the US biolabls in Ukraine (Putin destroyed  them in the opening days of the war). The UN wouldn't help, biowarfar labs on his border, testing products on the pbulic, were not acceptable so Putin acted. Putin wanted Western Ukraine to stop shelling Eastern Ukraine.Ukraine apologists keep acting like they were minding their own business when they were a crime capital for Dems, propping Dems up in power with money laundering, and engaging theft, graft, fraud, child traficking etc..

Too much death on both sides. Zelensky could have addressed the biolabs whe the issue surfaced, he could have hald back NATO per international consensus, Zelensky could have investigated the money laundering that the Dems were performing in Ukraine, Zelensky could have said 'yes' to Trump when Trump asked for an investigation. When Russia knocked out some infrastructure and waited for Zelensky to negotiate, Zelensky could have negotiated. Zelensky was supposed to save the Ukraine for the Ukrainians. His freakish behavior indicates that he will not save the Ukraine but will instead expend the Ukraine and her people like chaff in NATO's pursuit of control.

In WWII, the Soviets lost 13% of their population in the "win." Ukraine lost 16-25% of its population. In the current conflict, Ukraine has lost only 0.2-0.3% according to various estimates.

Hmm. Most Zeepers appear to be in that bracket so my question is: When they heard this news did they reflexively screech, “SLOBBO URCRAYKNEE!!!,” shut off the computers their Yook handlers bought them, (on our dime), ooze off their ratty, dog hair-covered sofas, pack their gear and hop a plane enroute to go fight for their leather-clad, gay-dancing, grifting “New Churchill?”

“Won’t allow NATO on his doorsteps anymore”?
So he is planning on taking Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Poland?

Interesting, we are closing in on the length of the “Great patriotic War” and pitin has yet to capture Ukraine.

LOL, just complete Russian propaganda idiocy.

Finland joined NATO, are they a 'stalking horse' to be used against Russia?

Or did Finland realize Putin has gone rogue, breaking more than a dozen international treaties when he invaded Ukraine?

Putin annexed a buffer region in Ukraine along Russia's borders.

Ukraine is the largest country in Europe, NOT a "buffer zone".

Putin tried to seize Ukraine's capitol.

Putin clearly stated his intention to subjugate Ukraine in his 2021 rambling 7,000 word essay posted on the Kremlin website which clearly states Ukraine cannot exist as an independent country.

Because he is the enemy of our enemy, Putin, who has thousands of nukes targeting us.
