Let’s be honest, Canada gave up on the concept of self-defence decades ago, too costly for their socialist economy.
If they are attacked, their plan is to sit back and have the big, bad, bully US come and save their Canadian bacon.

Yes. Absolutely.
The years of pax Americana say, 1946 - present, have been relatively peaceful. Few large wars (Ukraine - Russia and Iran -Iraq a couple of the biggest) our involvements, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf wars and Afghanistan, relatively low casualties, a bit over a hundred thousand dead spread over 80 years.
It has been an era where the world moved from mostly horribly poor to mostly well fed. Pax Americana has been exceptionally good for the whole world and the United States. An era of incredible technological improvements. It will be viewed as a golden age.
President Trump is working hard to extend it into the future. We need to get the stupid spending and debt under control.
What military-industrial complex?
You don’t know what you’re talking about.
That military-industrial complex has given our war fighters the technology and equipment to be victorious on the battlefield - when our stupid politicians allow it to be victorious.
Put yourself in a last generation fighter when your adversary is hosing away at you with their latest generation fighter and tell me that the military-industrial complex is a bad thing.
Sell them the jets, then deny them repair parts.
I am surprised Canada has a military that is more than ceremonial.

So, put up a J-20 against an F-15? I would still take the F-15. By the time Chinese leadership tells the pilot what to do, it will already be shot down. That was the Soviets biggest problem. Their air force was controlled by leaders who were on the ground, telling the pilots what to do.
Canada doesn’t need F-35s, they need Superhornets and Grippens.
Peace through strength.
No matter what, there will be upstarts and neer’do-wells in the world (Iran, N. Korea, China, Russia), so having a strong military is a must, at all times. Maybe not millions people strong, especially with the advent of the drone warfare going on today (and in the future) - but technological advantage is going to be a must.

Not much. Airforce veteran, worked for both TAC and SAC, in the private sector worked for Boeing as a project manager on various Airforce projects. Talked to pilots and technicians from the cold war to the most recent acquisitions. This includes former soviet pilots and technicians. Read a couple of Janes publications.
It doesn’t provide me with any expertise, but I do get to see it in action, interpret it to the best of my knowledge and make an assessment. I will stick with the F15 eating the J20’s lunch. Now if the F15 can do that, think of what the F22 will do.
No expertise needed to know the J-20 was an F-16 knockoff by way of the Lavi(thanks, IAF). Eagles > Falcons.
Not the issue. And unless you are flying one of these aircraft, you don’t know.
The issue is this myth about the military industrial complex that is only interested in making money and doesn’t care about the military or the country.
It’s that maligned MIC that produces these wondrous machines like the F-22. If you ever had your a$$ on the line you would be begging that MIC give you something better to fight with, not some cheap goods or expired technology.
