The Pentagon’s F/A-XX Fighter Mistake Could Cost America a War in the Pacific
National Security Journal ^ | 7/15/2025 | Brent Sadler

The U.S. Navy’s next-generation F/A-XX fighter is not a luxury but a critical necessity for countering the long-range missile threat posed by China. The current carrier air wing, reliant on the aging F/A-18 and the stealth-focused but range-limited F-35C, cannot “out-stick” Chinese defenses.

How China wins WWIII?

Sun Tzu's Art of War teaches China to win WW3 before going to war.

Trump's Art of the Deal does the same for the U.S., perhaps winning by not having to go to war in the first place. Trump is right that China needs us a lot more than we need them.

But I agree with the premise of the article. We should keep up militarily to be able to win future wars, not just past wars.

We need to be suspicious when articles like this come out. Plane manufacturers have skin in the game and clearly would like to build a new manned jet. But at some point fighter assets will likely be unmanned, flown by people on the ground. The advent of hypersonic missiles could make manned fighter jets obsolete.

Carriers will be in the deep blue water, not in striking distance of Chinese land targets.

That job is for F-35A and heavy bombers with advanced weapons.

The carriers will keep the lanes open/controlled from the west coast to at least Japan and the PI.

The next generation fighter should not have a pilot.

This is more deep state/industrial military complex bs. Like the told us about Russia being a real threat. They can’t even overrun Ukraine.

I have mixed feelings on this. We certainly need peer performance in out aircraft when compared to our adversaries. Traditionally Navy aircraft have suffered in this area because of the size, weight and performance penalties associated with carrier operations.

The Russians and Chinese have used the methods of using tried and true airframes and evolving them into their next generations of fighters. The US on the other hand, tries a "clean slate" with a lot of bells, horns and whistles that drive up cost and inevitably reduce procurement numbers. That cost us dearly with the F-22 where we have a Cadillac in pitiful numbers to fight the flying Toyota hoards the Chinese put up.

We would do well to evolve existing platforms and keep their mission basic to the design i.e. fighters fight, bombers bomb. That keeps us out of the "flying jackknife" F/A mode of operation.

Uh, China don’t win nuthin’ if they ain’t got no cash.

GroovyJets ain’t what’s needed for us to win.

We win when we stop buying crap from them. Period.

After that they can try to sell their junk to the Africans.

How about we just make better and longer range missiles? It is always the last mile in engineering that is the hardest to solve.

The sad fact of life is that the highly poly Navy Admirals have focused more on DEI and drag queen shows than they have on force protection

Recent experiences shown that a carrier task force cannot engage in close engagements without serious risks of taking catastrophic losses

That means that our carriers will have to operate at standoff distances not much closer than our ground based soon to be F47 and B21 fleet

The Navy is also having a bit of a time figuring out carrier based stealth opps and aircraft readiness

The bottom line is that the Navy needs to get its hanger in order and figure out carrier strike group force protection against Chinese and other peer adversaries before it can effectively deploy a 6 th Gen fighter from carriers

The decision to delay a 6th gen aircraft until that occurs is the right decision

Aircraft carriers are currently excellent platforms for drones and the Navy will probably gravitate to that mission in the interim

We don’t need the best plane.

We need the most powerful manufacturing industry in the world.....like we did in ww2 with the sherman tank.

Now we have a mecican manufacturing industry, if that.

Look at russia....can’t make enough drones to stomp out a tiny por nonfighting country.

That is us.
