This isn't the (unfortunately) routine White House scandal where malfeasance is expected somewhere along the line because of influential forces. This President's power derives from his adherence to truth and thus earning his base's support. One could see and feel the reciprocal love and trust between him and his supporters.
But now he risks losing all that for the sake of high placed and powerful people who deserve to be incarcerated for their sins against children? If this isn't "a hill to die on" I can't imagine a more worthy one.
The President has to get out there ahead of this ever-growing snowball and explain his reasoning to the American people (the hesitance to let those evil people fall because of the inevitable disruptions is my guess), before the faith and trust he's earned during the last ten years evaporates faster than Musk's friendship.
America can't afford many more Obama regimes before the foundations crack beyond repair.
