For such seminal moments in American history such as the Declaration of Independence, and the Revolutionary War, it would surprise one to know that not too many films revolve around these events. In fact, you would find more movies made about the Roman empire and many crucial moments and leaders within its history as a world power, than you do the American Revolution. What I particularly find interesting about this dynamic is that in America’s History, the foundation of what was once colonies that belonged to the British Empire, was fought and won by regular people uniting and banding together to break away from a King’s rule, making it the first major independent power to successfully do such a thing. And yet, there are a handful of movies that captures the essence of that spirit, one of which is the 2000 film The Patriot.
A Prelude as a Historic Backdrop to this movie:
The year is 1776. The 13 American colonies under the sovereignty of Great Britain, have established a system of self-governance and collaboration between each other. The Continental Congress was a governing body that hosted a convention of delegates from each colony to come together and deal with governmental matters and concerns, particularly with British rule and the rights of the colonists.

We owe our freedom to just one third of the population.A third was aginst and a third didnt care one way or the other.amazing
Great movie. It’s on my list of movies to watch periodically. If I didn’t have family visiting, I would be tempted to watch it tonight. Probably will on Sunday, though, when things quiet down around here.
John Ford’s DRUMS ALONG THE MOHAWK (1939) is on TCM tonight at 10:30 PM. This is THE great Hollywood Revolutionary War movie. Highly recommended.
Must’ve seen it 25 years ago with my kid. Sat near the back. In a row behind me were maybe five chatty teenagers. Turned around and announced, “Ain’t no way you’re talking through this whole movie.” They left.
It is a great advertisement for cardio.
Yep, Henry Fonda outruns the Indian braves trying to catch him.

I don’t believe that. The patriot cause was favored by a large majority. Remember how easily the royal governors were gotten rid of, and how few Tories actually turned out to fight for the British. The vast majority of militiamen turned out were patriots. The FFs were astutes statesmen. They would never have dared fighting the world’s greatest military power with so little popular support.
