X: Karmelo Anthony Requesting Free Lawyer as "Indigent"
X ^

Posted on 06/29/2025 2:29:52 PM PDT by TigerClaws

BREAKING: Karmelo Anthony submitted an Indigent Packet to the Collin County Court, requesting court-appointed legal representation as an indigent (financially destitute) defendant.

However, just 24 hours ago, the Anthony family updated their GiveSendGo campaign to reflect a need to raise an additional $1.4 million for “a legal team.”

Karmelo Anthony’s mother, Kala Hayes, who manages the GiveSendGo, stated on April 17th (two months ago) that they had just gained access to the funds. At that time, they had already raised $350,000. The fundraiser has now reached $538,000.

According to a source, their current known attorney, Mike Howard, is more than likely charging a retainer fee of $10,000–$30,000 and charges $400–$500 per hour.

Where did the money go? Why do they need $1.4 million? Will they be granted indigence and an appointed attorney with a GiveSendGo of this magnitude? Is this considered fraud?

Since all that money he raised on Go Fund Me which was set up for legal purposes, since that money never went to legal fees, shouldn't he have to claim that as salary now?

I just did a search for that, and here's what the response was:

"If someone sets up a GoFundMe account for legal fees and the money isn't used for legal fees, it may still be taxable depending on the specific circumstances and local laws. It is advisable to consult with a tax professional to determine the tax implications in a particular case."

We are still a free country. People can donate all the money they choose to this kids defense. He asked for a public attorney but he is going to need some big guns to escape life in prision.

City of Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was charged with taking $4.5 million, some of it federal money intended to be used to help sick or disadvantage children. 24 counts of racketeering, extortion, and tax fraud. Jury found him guilty and he went to prison.

Amazingly, as the missing millions were never located, Kilpatrick filed to be considered “indigent” and then the taxpayers paid for his long ongoing lawyer fees and the appeal costs.

Later, President Trump commuted his 28 year sentence.

I missed the part about Trump pardoning him. Anyone remember the rationale for the pardon? Just curious as a Michigander.

Where, oh where, did that money go?

Where is the family living? What kind of cars do they drive? What kind of clothes do they wear? What were their recent major purchases?

Do we even need to ask?

the worst thing that could happen to this fool is if his request was granted and he was assigned the next PD in the rota ... said newly appointed PD could then begin work by trying to convince Karmelo that his safest bet would be to plead guilty ...

I have no love for this kid.

However, if the attorney is charging $500/hour, a million dollars covers 2,000 man hours. If the partner has 3 other attorneys putting in 60 hours a week on this case, that’s only 8 weeks of lawyering.

Now, yeah…they should cut back, get a cheaper lawyer, etc.

But it’s not unfathomable to eat thru that money real fast on legalities.

They need to just take this cold-blooded murderer out and string him up. He is useless in a civilized society.

From his gfm page:

“While legal defense is a critical part of this journey, we want to make it clear that this fund is not solely dedicated to legal expenses.”

Wow. $541,000 and cars, houses and bling is more important that keeping their brat out of prison.

How about a constructive trust, freezing it for the civil judgment the victim’s family will receive in the wrongful death civil action?

Texas has no income tax and federal allows individuals can gift something like 12k tax free. That said it is also hard to believe our government would let a half mil exchange hands and not find some way to wet its beak.

A “free” lawyer will cost this guy 15 years in prison over and above what he’s eventually going to serve.

“While legal defense is a critical part of this journey, we want to make it clear that this fund is not solely dedicated to legal expenses.”

This is the key for the family to avoid fraud charges. They have publicly stated the funds are being used to re-locate for safety, hire security, and purchase vehicles, goods, and sundries.

They re-located to a million dollar gated community where they are renting a home (smart - no assets). The 'security' is like the Black Panther Friends & Family plan. They acquired some Cadillac SUVs (leased? again no assets. smart). The 'goods and sundries' are no doubt everything the family wanted to buy on Amazon.

I guess the hi-falutin lawyer saw where the money was going - not to him - and quit.

The family sure has made out okay as they toss this murderer to the wolves.

"That said it is also hard to believe our government would let a half mil exchange hands and not find some way to wet its beak."

Especially with Biden's American Rescue Plan Act, that declared any transaction made after March 11, 2021 that exceeded $600 must be reported to the IRS.

The pathetic murderers family sucked up at over a half million dollars of donated money to help this Criminal loser. Now the family and he are pleading that they are all broke, of course they bought new house and new cars. What a parasitic bunch of losers.

Hopefully the murdering degenerate will get life in prison with no parole.
