Iran May Close Strait of Hormuz: ‘Take The Oil’ and Sink The Navy
National Security Journal ^ | 6/23/2025 | Michael Rubin

Posted on 06/23/2025 8:48:22 AM PDT by whyilovetexas111

Following the US bombing of its nuclear sites, Iran has threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil chokepoint. Rather than direct retaliation on the Iranian mainland, the US should counter this threat by seizing Kharg Island, the terminal through which 90% of Iran’s oil is exported. Additionally, the US should issue an ultimatum to Iran’s two navies—the IRGC’s coastal patrol and the regular blue-water navy to either dock and surrender or be sunk, thus ensuring freedom of navigation without a broader, destructive war on Iranian soil.

Iran can’t even close their own air space, much less the Strait. Oh, they may try, but it’ll last about as long as their air defenses lasted against Israel.

The problem s Irans 14 kilo class subs. These are diesel electric and very quiet. The can lurk in the 20 mile wide shipping lanes and pick off a few tankers and that will be all it takes to close the straits. They could care less about the environmental disaster a supertanker would spill into to the gulf.

I think Israel is waiting to see if there will be regime change.

If so, then leave it.

If not, then blow it up.

Another reason to be drilling in the USA.

Does Iran have any real ability to close the Straits right now, with so much of their political and military leadership either dead or in hiding?

Time to play mercenary in the strait. Charge countries to protect their ships.

Then take out Iran’s electrical grid..power plants, transmission lines, substations.

That’s a bad idea. If we want the Iranian people to rise up and overthrow the mullahs, we need to avoid harming civilian infrastructure. Destroying the power grid only punishes ordinary Iranians and makes resistance harder, not easier.

We need to think beyond just toppling the regime. When the mullahs flee, the Iranian people—who’ve been prisoners in their own country—will need Kharg Island to rebuild.

Destroying it only makes their future harder.

>Another reason to be drilling in the USA.

We need regime change longer than one term to really take advantage of our natural resources, since the Dems just have to run out the clock in court, and have the full support of the ChiComs and OPEC to do so.

Hmm, seems like an investigation is in order ...

I agree fully.

That’s why think it will be last to go. Only if regime change doesn’t happen internally

The EUnuchs would be hit much harder by a closure. Let them supply the troops to seize Kharg.

Isn’t the Strait 60 miles wide ?

Why would the Iranians want to cut off their only means of selling their own oil ?
They need to sell to China and India, just as bad as the Chinese and Indians need to buy it.

Plus the world would unite and cheer the end of the Mullahs. if they did.

They close the Strait then China has no oil. They ain’t going to like that at all. They might even join the US in kicking Iran’s @$$.

I don't think so. I believe as far back as the 1980's Iran had the ability to close the Strait to everyone else but themselves. Oil cargo that benefits Iran would keep going.

“Really. Some other navy needs to keep this open.

Not our problem.”

I agree. Not our problem. But it does create an opportunity/incentive to having the Asian nations (who heavily rely upon this source of oil) to become more active in the area, which I do not believe is something we desire.

I do not believe it will induce China to ally itself with us either.

Closing the Strait of Hormuz seems to be engineered to force the super powers into a very uncomfortable and complex situation.
