Iran May Close Strait of Hormuz: ‘Take The Oil’ and Sink The Navy
National Security Journal ^ | 6/23/2025 | Michael Rubin

Following the US bombing of its nuclear sites, Iran has threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil chokepoint. Rather than direct retaliation on the Iranian mainland, the US should counter this threat by seizing Kharg Island, the terminal through which 90% of Iran’s oil is exported. Additionally, the US should issue an ultimatum to Iran’s two navies—the IRGC’s coastal patrol and the regular blue-water navy to either dock and surrender or be sunk, thus ensuring freedom of navigation without a broader, destructive war on Iranian soil.

We want our billions Obama gave you. Your oil production would be fine. China and India have to be sh$tting bricks right now. Take the oil and crush their economies in one swoop.

Not our problem! Only a small part of US crude comes from the Middle East and it all goes to California. (Because they won’t build a pipeline to Texas)

It’s China’s problem now. Let them sail their Navy 8,000 miles, pick sides in the Middle East knife fight and convoy their tankers home.

It will be funny watching them try

The ChiComs got their way when the mullahs tried this in February.

Unless the PRC has a new source for discounted oil, this threat is meaningless.

Okay. Occupy the island. But then you’ll need to control a buffer zone near the island to prevent sniping and such. That will require infantry sweeps now and again.

Uh, no. That’s called mission creep, and it’s never a good thing.

They close the Strait then China has no oil. They ain’t going to like that at all. They might even join the US in kicking Iran’s @$$.

Really. Some other navy needs to keep this open.

Not our problem.

Dock your Navy Iran and surrender or we will BBQ Kharg Island from high above.

Just blow up kharg island.

Then Iran has no money to rebuild.

China loses if the Strait is closed I’m sure they told Tehran that but Iran will have to calculate in another direction.

Any hits on Americans will give President Trump and the “Regime Change” justification. Netanyahu prodding that way anyway.

And Russia and China can see the long-term implications for them are negative in that scenario.

Pakistan to the east of Iran certainly has nuclear capability and financial and military ties to China.

If thats the mission, to wipe it out, it should be within Israel’s ballpark to do it. Further they would take more satisfaction doing it than we would given the damage they’ve taken.

Closing the Strait of Hormuz would be quite a gift to our economy right when we are bringing our oil production back on line and opening up new areas for exploration that were placed off limits by administrations since Reagan.
